Whammie, I dunno.
Maybe they're angry cause they don't get any coke. Maybe they do but the rats get more?

SpitFire

What about the chimps?  Do you think they lust after the lovely lasses that stroll by while they are locked in their cages?

Wham, yes! I think that IS what they would say.

Free coke, free sex, free food, room & board,  hell, why not?  (NOT!!)

SpitFire,

No doubt!

Thoughts from a rat:

"Hey, these stupid humans!  If I push this bar 100 times then eventually I get some cocaine, and that will keep me going until I get to the next rush!  But I got nothing better to do, so I might as well appease them."

SpitFire,

Or how about a chimpanzee, since we are supposed to be so closely related.  Do they look from behind the bars and say to one another, "Dang, if I were not locked in this cage, I would HIT THAT!" ?

Wham, totally agree on the dogs and cats thing here!
However, yeah, rats and mice are often the subject of lab testings, but unfortunately, so are many other animals. But, I think that rats and mice may kinda have fun during those psychology based ones like the maze and Pavlov type tests. Otherwise, there life would consist of hunting for food and not getting killed by an old lady with a broom or a hungry snake. At least this gives them something to do.

Here is a thought for you, SpitFire,

Rats are supposed to be a highly intelligent species, and I would like to hear what they have to say about being the subjects of laboratory tests!

{I love dogs and cats, both.  I think a dog would probably express its love, while a cat would inform you about how to greater meet its needs!  LOL}

Strat, my two possible theories about the wrens would be
they like you and like to see you and/or the snakes add excitement and challenge to their lives.

FactorF, maybe all pandas are gay?
Just a thought.

OBP, I agree, but
I just lost my German Shepherd best pal, Brittany a few months ago to cancer and I think toward the end, knowing she was dying, she was summing up her life.

JJ, your short-term memory must be as bad as mine....
The question asked if you could communicate with ANY TYPE of animal... Better?

Temple, I guess it's a good thing they can't talk!
I think they'd be demanding a lot more than a littermaid!

Jems, I bet there dreaming of chasing mice or something.
Or being chased by a giant mouse out for revenge?

Cats...partly because I am a "cat person" anyway, so I think we'd get along well...and partly because they can be sneeky quiet and observe people without being noticed, so I could get them to help me dig up all kinds of interesting dirt on the neighbors for me.

I already talk to my dog.
Good conversations, actually. So I think I want to talk to birds, all kinds. For starters, I want to ask those silly little Carolina Wrens why they insist on building a nest in my dryer vent whenthere are plenty of hanging baskets on the porch, completely snake free.

I think I'd have to talk to the pandas.
Inquiring minds want to know why they are not into reproduction or even practicing for it...

Definitely a dog. Dogs seem to know all, but we can only pick up what they are trying to communicate when they are happy or in pain. I really would like to know what they are really thinking when laying down with their eyes wondering around the room. I'd like to know what they dream (probably another dog or maybe bones). Either way, it would be facinating... DAWG'S... I love them...

I can't decide.  I need to decide between dogs and cats?  Then there are horses, cows, chickens, doves, pigeons, snakes, lizards, ??????.  I guess dogs are at the top by a cat hair, but cats are #2.  But I am officially undecided.    JJ

I'm with Jemmie on this one..
I'm convinced my cat knows the secrets to the universe, she just hasn't figured out how to tell me yet!  I'm so close to my cats, I would like to know how better to take care of them, and others, my little feral - Tessa - and rescues.  I'm sure Scrapper would tell me, could you PLEASE get me one of those littermaid things already?  DAMN! lol...

Cat
All kinds of cats--big, small, wild, domisticated.  I feel they must have such wonderful things in their minds.  And I'm always, always wanting to know what my cats are dreaming when their legs, tails, and whiskers are twitching in their sleep.
