Yup, I`ve done that and I think our brains store images from everywhere, like magazines, books, movies, anything that attracted us for even a few seconds.
Or, perhaps a past life

Quirky, we limit ourselves by thinking distance is an issue and that
it takes time to get there, as in normal travel or even astral travel...Quantum physics teaches us that everything is connected via energy. One need only "think" and remotely be someplace else. Distance is no big deal. Time and space can't stop us. In other words, you're already there by virtue of being connected to everything else. All you need is awareness of what is happening there using your mind's eye (hence, remote viewing or whatever elese they want to call it.)
There are Quantum phycists who have done studies where they split the atom and send one in one direction and the other in another direction. Space and time don't affect the fact that they continue to "communicate" to each other as if they're still one atom.
See why I love quantum physics so much? It opens up all kinds of possibilities!

The answer is simple
At the risk of over simplifying, we are God having a human experience. We created it all, we know it all. In our dreams, we sometimes awaken enough to know places, people etc.
Well. its one idea.

Quirky...
Good question. I for one gave up trying to figure that out long ago. I have seen so much in my dreams, even people I have never met, or at least don't remember meeting. So, to me it doesn't matter if it is made up by my mind or it is real. Because to know either would not change my life any I don't think. It is a fun question to ponder though.

Quirky, there are many different reasons and theories
about this. I often have OBE's and also vivid dreams. They are two different things, usually. Our minds are such powerful tools. We don't even know the half of it. I think as far as dreaming of the vivid details of a certain place could be a combination of things we've seen and places we've been that our mind puts together for us. Most things in dreams are symbolic. It's the way our subconcious solves our problems in the best way it can.

It depends on heaps of things...
Whether you believe what you see is an actual representation of reality or not. Whether you believe in past lives or astral travelling or even if you just believe you have an active imagination.
Remember, there are no stupid questions except the one not asked!

Very interesting to read
your post and the comments. Can l tell you about something that happened some time ago. I used to run relaxation and creative visualisation sessions During an evening with a group of friends - all very intuitive - we decided to do some visualisation. I kept the things l said quite broad so that people could interpret for themselves and go where their minds took them. One girl put herself into a buttercup, closed the petals over herself and stayed there. The others started into different scenes, but struggled to hold their visions and kept drifting into other completely different scenes. Discussing it afterwards we found they were all crossing and merging in and out with each others visions. Very spooky!

I don't know. There were alot of other details to that particular dream...and there were other children that I ended up finding too. It almost makes me wish I could walk into the house that it really happened in just to see if it's the same one. ((I have thought that several times))

The very worst one I can recall having was the one where I went into the house, and walked up the stairs. There was a bedroom, a little girls room, with two beds in it. There was a man sitting on one of the beds, crying. I asked him what was wrong and he picked his hear up and looked towards his left. There was a door way there...I walked through it into a bathroom. The bathtub was overflowing...and in it was a baby...face down. I think it was like two days later that I heard about that woman drowning all of her five children in her bathtub. I instantly thought of that dream. I don't know what that means but it was awful !!!

I'll begin with Carl Jung. He had some erudite conclusions about the nature and causes of dreams. Even dreams occur at different levels of our consciousness. Day-dreaming has a lot real life representations in them embelished by wishful thinking and fantasies. Deeper level dreaming, if recalled at all have certainly some bases on where they came from and how they came about. The mind is a frontier we haven't even scratched the surface of.

Oh man...don't get me started on dream work!
There are three possible explanations for this. I'll start with the basic and most acceptable one first.
1. You may have actually seen/read/heard of another place and just don't remember it consciously. It could be something that stuck with you even as far back as infacny. Unconsciously, those images can blend with other images and create something different and seemingly new and undiscovered.
2. You actually have a very creative imagination and have literally created that world out of nowhere. However, it is unlikely that it wasn't created with at least some input from your conscious life.
3. This is the most controversial, but there is a school of thought that believes we (humans) are all connected in an unconscious state. The collective unconscious that links us together in our dreams. You are born with an unconscious knowledge of things thanks to generations before you.
Anyway, I think dreams are fascinating... you might want to read up on it too!

Dear Quirkyalone, I gues it has to do with the subconscience; probably you've seen it before, but never realized at that moment that you were seeing or experiencing it. I had a few similar experiences. "Deja vu" as the French would also name it.
Bye the way, The Sixth Sense, The Green Mile, Dances With Wolves..... excellent choice of movies!!!

Good question
I have no answer. But I'd assume it's somewhat the same with the people you see in your dreams that you've never met in "real life."
I think Ariala has a good point with her astral travel theory. However, I haven't done enough research on it to know much about the ins and outs of astral travel.

I know a man that dreamed he was standing by a phone booth in London. When he awoke, he instantly picked up his phone here in the U.S. and dialed a friend that was visiting there, and found that the other person could describe the exact phone booth from the corner near his hotel! He was feeling lonely, and glad his friend had called.
I liken this to astral travel, and believe it really is happening. Tell me if the following ever happens to you: In my dreams I always interact with complete strangers. I rarely dream of my "real world" acquaintances. What does this mean?

Ariala,
that's very interesting. Re: the frequency theory....so you could "see" all the way to another continent half a world away?? I tend to think the astral travel theory is probably correct. But that begs another question: if you are really there in spirit, then whatever is going on in the "dream" is actually really happening to you?

Quirky, the military invested a lot of money in something called
Remote Viewing...people are trained to "see" places remotely (from their location) in an awakened state. I've done this myself...it happens automatically in dreams at times, too...since everything is connected, the mind's eye can see far, via frequencies (like radio waves); some think it's astral travel at work and your spirit body leaves and travels to another location.

I've had dreams where I read part of a book I've never read before. Later while reading the book I came across that section. It's weird but it happens. They call it deja vu. Fact is, you could have also subconsciously seen the place on tv, in a movie... somewhere and used it that way too. Either way, it's kind of cool!
