"Bungee cords" are elastic with hooks.

I'll bet it is an Indian item originally.

 

Never, never bungee jump covered with festive crepe and tissue paper when people are clustered around your recoil target yelling "Throw the pinata!".

I can't answer your questions, but . . .
If you can help me find the origin of the word "bungie" (or "bungee"), I'd appreciate it!  I've looked all over and can't find anything.  This search started months ago when a friend thought I might know the origin of the word simply because I majored in English and have a fascination with linguistics.  Alas, he was wrong.  But I've been trying to find the answer to his question ever since.
