I so totally do. In fact, I was going to write a post asking bloggers
if they'd ever had any totally original ideas, sat on them and saw someone else act on that very idea!   Seriously.

Alf,
that was my point exactly. The ideas are already "out there" so they exist on that level, and then at another point they may exist within a human's brain. So technically, two (or more) people could have the exact same "totally original idea." Of course, I'm not saying this is the way it really is...just that it could be.

hmm, is this where I mention that the topic for this post
has been made before????

Quirky,
OK, my concept of an original idea is a little different than yours.  My definition is that an original idea is one that has not slid across across the synopsis of a humans brain before.  In that case I think there are tons of oringinal ideas left.  The collective consciousness of the universe is another matter indeed.  That's like God right?  In that case I will stick to the re-packaging philosophy.

Alfster,
You could give me a million "new" ideas but there is no proof they are not already out in the collective consciousness of the universe. Just because no one has discovered them yet, that doesn't mean they aren't already there. Just my opinion of course. But hey, I can always use "new" ideas, so fire away!!

jem,
I thought it was, you should always ask it because "there's no such thing as a dumb question." LOL

it's not about new ideas

it's about repackaging, it's about "making it new," as the poet said.  Got a funny hitchcock story which i've told before -- so stop reading at this point if you remember it:

hitchcock decided to keep a notebook to record ideas he could remember in his unconscious mind.  first night, he wakes up in the middle of the night, writes down his idea, falls asleep.  Next morning he reads his idea:

boy meets girl boy loses girl boy gets girl

He never used the notebook again.

better i suppose to adapt stories where Boy Dresses as Boy's Mother and Kills Girl in Shower ... tg

Quirky - glad it made you laugh dear. And yes, it would be a blockbuster.

Norseman
I still think there is time for the stand-up pee thingy. Pamper with a tube down the pant leg may be a beginning. You see I am not sure I want to stand in the middle of the lake in a canoe. The tube makes me think maybe I could hang a leg over the side. Too a norseman might know how cold a shinny hinny gets in the cold. Good luck to both of you on original ideas!

What a great question Quirky...
It's not my writing ideas that get stolen, it's my inventions.  I invented a new chain saw case, too late!  I had an Idea for this thing called the "equalizer" that would let women pee while they were standing up...you scoff?  Think about being in the middle of the lake fishing...do you really want to row all the way back to shore?  Anyway, somebody else marketed it under another name.  Your premise that all ideas have been thought of I disagree with, just because I can't bring myself to accept it.  2000 years ago people thought the same thing I'm sure, but they were wrong.  There are new ideas!  I'm going to think of one and give it to you so that you can write about it.

Always happens to me!

Isn't there some advice floating around that if you have a certain question in class you should ask it no matter how stupid you think it is, because if you have the question, chances are someone else does as well?

I guess the same goes for "original" ideas.

I think it would be fun to have some bloggers reading the minds of other bloggers and we could stop some of the outward bashing.

Ariala,
Everyone who "starts young" has a few of those manuscripts in their files. I recently found a short story of mine written when I was probably 14 or 15, gads it was pretty awful.

Quirky, lol...I would have to find it first. I wonder if I kept it? It
would definitely have to by typed in since it was before the days of computer, and perhaps typerwriters, too!

Ariala,
Does that mean you are judging the piece as no good? Maybe it's a masterpiece, huh? You should post it for me!!

When I was just a kid I used to think about this subject and it motivated

me to write a fiction piece called Life on a Piece of Dust.  Yes, I was a strange child and might have been oxygen deprived once or twice.
