It never ends, WitchFlower! That's the problem. It happens ALL THE TIME!

If it is a regular client, I allow them to make payments on big bills, too. As long as they've established some credibility with me, then I'm cool with it. This women was brand new! Sheesh. The nerve of some people! I'd like to walk into a grocery store sometime, fill up my cart, then tell the cashier I'll pay them later.

What a maddening story!

It seems if the woman had NO other money at all, she would at least have offered an explanation. Our vet is very understanding, and if we happen to hit a big bill at a bad time, will make payment arrangements because some things just can't wait.  Too bad this had to happen at such a hard time in your life. Hope the next clients are twice as nice!

I could report them, Kay-Ren, but they would say, "Well, at least
they brought it into the hospital" or something like that, ya know? Sometimes it's like pulling teeth to get Animal Control off their asses to do anything!

Can't you report people like that to the human society?

Rachel, he was just plain SICK! Hard to pin point it from such a
visit, since we didn't do extensive tests or anything. We could tell he was extremely anemic just by the gray gums and he was dehydrated, too. Poor little guy. I hope he's doing okay...as far as the mother...I told the lady she must be seen cause she can't be very healthy herself!  Who knows if she'll bring her in! Oy! This world is so full of crappy people!!

The same as the pet owner!
There are so many people who don't take care of their animals and then throw them at the feet of vets and expect them to do something out of the goodness of their hearts.  It's sad.  But, I'm glad you were able to help the little guy.  What was wrong with him?

Rachel, do the same thing that we did or the pet owner?
Hopefully, it would be the same thing for the animal hospital, but unfortunately, it's unlikely.

Rude!
But there are SO many people out there that would do the same thing.

Thanks Shadow! I know, it is quite frustrating...
Especially when we are faced with those who think we are "not real doctors" or assume we are just a bunch of "animal lovers" that put bandaids on animals. We have much of the same equipment like X-Ray machines, surgical equipment and supplies, etc. and there are still those that view us as if we don't need money to operate our facility!! (God forbid make any money to PAY the salaries of the staff members!) Glad you understand! Pfffftt! People. I'll never fully understand them!

Spitfire,

I spent years working with and for a vet in my hometown and man I sure know how you are feeling right now for sure. People are so damn scamming nowadays. They think vets don't even have the bills that doctors do. Or they think vets still swap out treatment for food or something. You are lucky to have your job. Are you a certified vet tech?  shadow

Evangeline, that is the difference between them and us...
There are many rich people who look down upon the poor as if they are scum under their shoe, and then there are normal HUMAN BEINGS with feelings who realize we are ALL human and just trying to survive. I guess it can't be classified between the rich, middle class, or poor cause I am sure there are many poor people that are probably better human beings than I, but it's all a matter of respect and gratitude. You obviously possess both. I just wish more people could, too.

EXACTLY, HolyG!!!!
Just my point. Hell, I would have given something! In fact, I would have at the very least expressed how thankful I was that they even LOOKED at the puppy...even giving me the time of day, walking in without an appointment, having no money, and being CLOSED, yeah, I would have offered even $5. At least that would have been polite.

posted by SpitFire70 on August 19, 2004 at 9:29 PM | link to this | reply

Thank you Hollee! Actually, I realize it may have been their last $50
However, IF it were me in their position, knowing that I was just given at least $150-$200 worth of free services AFTER the hospital was CLOSED, I would have given at LEAST $10 toward the invisible bill and would have insisted they bill me for the rest. I would have at least expressed how grateful I was. They never even said thank you. Some people (many in the local area my hospital is located in) are just so used to getting free hand outs from the government, the city, etc. they are just used to it and it seems many simply "expect" it.

Sass, Like I said to Quirky,
I just needed them out of my face or I may have done more than just keep her change. PMSing at the time, too...It definitely could have gotten really ugly!!

posted by SpitFire70 on August 19, 2004 at 9:18 PM | link to this | reply

Ya know, Quirks, I thought about that!
But I was so pissed off at that point that I just wanted that bitch out of my face and out of my hospital!

Sassy, I am never surprised about people now...
Some people shouldn't even be able to own a frickin' pet rock. Damn.  Dismay

I want to slap that bitch!!
Let me tell you something: I live in the Garden District, one of the wealthiest in the nation (we bought and semi-restored a tiny cottage, but we are not the 'quality' and get sniffed at regularly). These people are cheap. Maybe that's how they get rich to begin with.  They get illegal alien housekeepers (don't like blacks in the house, I've been told) and they pay them 3 fucking dollars an hour.  I have chronic pain and I can no longer push the vaccuum cleaner without having a bad episode so I asked one of my neighbors if she knew of anyone.  That's when I got the 3 dollar an hour bit. Plus, this bitch is telling me how that is a lot of money because it is not taxed.  I couldn't help it. I just looked at her and said, "Oh. Sort of like capital gains."  The broad was so dumb, she didn't get it. But I did get her housekeeper.  I did my budget and found I could squeeze out about $100 a month if I cut down on other things.  And I offered her $50 a day(about 2.5 hours), for two days a month.  This woman, who is helping my spanish, is so good to me, she works herself to death.  I won't let her clean the bathroom and we fight over the toilet scrub brush. You see, my mom was a house cleaner and that's how she supported us after my father died.  I scrub my own toilet.  And if I had the money, I'd pay the woman better than that.

Unbelievable
Hell even if they really were broke (like i am right now!) and part of that money was for gas and food, etc., at least offer something.  Of course the fact that she actually had a $50 bill tells me she just flat didn't want to pay.  Greedy bitch is right.

Spitfire - May have been all the money they had to their name -
hard to judge esp. if you're like me and the dog and cat eat before I do. Oh yeah, and the kids. Beautiful dogs by the way. Sorrow for your Brittany but obviously much loved.

I agree with Quirky
What could they have done about it? Call the cops? I think not! They owed you a hell of a lot more than that.

Spitfire,
you should have just closed the cash register, said "thank you" and kept their "change."

Like I always say, nothing surprises me!
Maybe it was her partying money. Some people shouldn't be allowed to own pets.
