Done, Sarwood! Start respecting!
Dear Mr. Limbaugh: Thank you for so eloquently expressing the conservative perspective on today's news stories. While the cocky attitude, be it feigned or real, gets wearisome and you sometimes go rather far astray in peripheral matters such as why the global warming crowd monitors icebergs and the nature of forest fires, you nevertheless speak the turth in your area of speciality, which is a keen, insightful and often brilliantly satirical analysis of current events and the people behind them. In a culture that inexplicably genuflects towards the Michael Moores and Dan Rathers, the balance you bring is greatly appreciated. I also want to express my appreciation for your philanthropy, and I am always amazed at the results of your annual fundraising drives for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Thanks for helping destroy the image painted by liberals that conservatives are greedy and selfish. Sincerely, T. Patrick Berry

If you want my respect, I'll first have to see your open letter to Rush Limbaugh.

...the Have's and Have Moore's (cont'd.)
In trying to deal with the terrorist situation, we as a nation, must be very careful not to become what we loath.  What is it that we loath, you may ask?  How about fanatic fundamentalist religions hell bent on homogenizing the globe with their way of life.  Sound familiar?  Oh, come to think of it, I believe Saddam Hussein felt the same way about the fundamentalist Islamics in his own country.  He crushed them every chance he got because he knew  they were a danger to his dictatorship.  Doesn't that make him our ally?  Most of the crimes we (in the guise of a new Iraqi government) are charging him with today were aided and abetted by our own government.  Doesn't that make those proceedings a sham?  "Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when we practice to deceive!" And you wonder why they hate us so.

...the Have's and the Have Moore's!

First, if you don't get the play on words in the subject title, you have no grounds to be writing an opinion on this subject.

Second, MM didn't threaten to sue anyone who "disagrees" with him, instead, he hired Chris Lehane & Mark Fabiani, former advisors to Bill Clinton & Al Gore, to go after anyone who "slanders" him or his work.

Third, there are very few things new in this movie.  To MM's credit, he has distilled a dizzying array of already known & published facts by former white house, CIA, FBI, and other insiders into a fascinating, funny, and at times, depressing look at a situation that, in my view, warrants even further scrutiny.  If any of this information is proven to be true beyond the shadow of a doubt, Bush and his cronies should be tried at the Hague for crimes against humanity right alongside the "thugs" they have been trying to pursue.

...living there must be tough in this climate. The last time I visited, I was there for a month, and I saw enough to convince me to stay the Hell away from America at least until Bush is kicked out, and probably until the nation starts to re-remember and genuinely re-live it's founding principles.

The Fathers must be spinning in their graves.

(I must ask you about your intriguing name some day!)

...I'm not interested in defending Moore against the peurile namnes you and others like to call him.

And yes, it may be propaganda of a sort, but perhaps the people flocking to see it are just depserate for some BALANCE in the propaganda that's forced down their throats day in, day out. Push any system too far to the right, and it will spring back at you eventually.

Rawk on, Damon
I actually LIVE in the country and I can see all this sh*t.  Maybe it's because I take the time to stop and think... you know, that technique they taught us all those years in school.

Damon ~  I agree wholeheartedly with your first five statements.

After that, making $25mil doesn't make him any less of a liar and con artist in my eyes.  He's making a lot of dough by preaching to the choir of his followers, so good for him.  Biggest money-making propoganda film in history, I reckon.

Beyond that, I think he's still a opportunistic blowhard with little integrity and less character. His money sure doesn't change that.

Another raving sensationalist historian, but not much of a prophet.

Michael Moore...
...is fat.
Michael Moore is a coward.
Michael Moore is un-American.
Michael Moore is a liar.
Michael Moore is still fat.

Blah blah blah.

Did it escape anyone's notice that this film took $25 million on it's first weekend, a record for any documentary film ever?

How does that fit with your whinging and blubbing, folks?

Why don't you just admit it? He's a threat to your cozy little Faux News world view who is bringing to light some issues that you find uncomfortable or distasteful and that you'd rather stayed where Bush put them - firmly swept under the carpet, out of sight. Sure, you might dislike his body shape, his film-making technique, his team of lawyers, but at least be brave enough to admit - to yourselves, if not to the world - that the real, underlying source of your discomfort with Moore is that he's punching holes in the web of deceit that's being woven by the White House, and you can't cope with that.

Oh, and it's kinda funny seeing him criticised for being fat and being prepared to sue. Looking across the Atlantic from here in the UK, that pretty much sums up the average American.

Thanks for reading! I heard an even better suggestion, one that overrides my earlier thoughts on seeing the movie. Donate the price of a ticket to a charity for military families. Far better use of money than to pad Moore's bank account.

"Jeez . . . " was my precise reaction when Moore said categorically on This Week that he would sue anyone who either criticized the movie or him. That isn't an exact quote, but it's certainly what he was communicating.

Don't pay to see this movie

Buy a taicket for Shrek2 or something with a positive message, and when you pass the "ticket taker" make sure you have an empty popcorn bag and hope you don't have to use it while you witness the fantasy op-ed disguised s a documentary.

Jeez...
Can I just say that Moore didn't hire lawyers to sue anyone who doesn't agree with him?  He got them in case anyone tries to attack him with a libel suit.  You're allowed to disagree all you want; millions of people are doing it right now.

WHAT MICHAEL MOORE IS SAYING ABOUT YOU AND ME: HIS FELLOW AMERICANS
Not only am I in complete agreement with Mr. Berry AKA WriterofLight in his scathing assessment of Michael Moore's conduct during his Sunday interview. (I.E., Moore says he'll sue anyone who doesn't agree with him????? Excuuuuuuse me?) I also find it incredulous that Moore is "out there" now telling the world Americans are the dumbest people on the planet, and that while doing so, an entire grassroots movement of impressionable, non-critical thinking, movie-going sycophants are now being mobilized to hand out political flyers, using this liar's movie as an alleged basis to vote anti-Bush in November.

roofpig13, thanks for an excellent suggestion. I shall do that. It should prove quite enlightening and entertaining.

By the way, I've tried several times to send Mr. Moore this letter, without success.

Interesting post
I'm no fan of Moore, myself. Threatening to sue someone for disagreeing with him is worse than cowardly. I mean, whatever happened to our First Amendment right of free speech?

posted by kidnykid on June 28, 2004 at 12:07 PM | link to this | reply

So do you check up on Michael Moore's website to see what he has to say in defense of the attacks on him?

Also, having the lawyers is a smart thing to do.  Saying all he has to do is stand behind the truth is a little like saying I don't need to see a doctor because I know God will heal me.  It hurts more to be unprepared.

One other thing - someone calling me a demagogue for criticizing the most demagogic movie to come out since who knows when . . .

posted by WriterofLight on June 27, 2004 at 6:51 PM | link to this | reply

Something I forgot to mention: If the movie is so factual, why does Moore have to hide behind ridiculous and utterly unsustainable threats of litigation against anyone who criticizes it? Truth need hide behind nothing. Only lies need that kind of cover, a cover born of paranoia and desperation.

Thanks for reading, Cynthia! Tell you what - I'll go watch the movie with an open mind, if you'll listen to Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity with an open mind. At the very least, go look at www.moorelies.com. But then you’ll be saying, “Please, don’t bother me with the facts!” because the facts don’t support Moore at all. You want everyone to expose themselves only to what you agree with; I want them to hear both sides, and hear them fairly, because a fair hearing of both sides will immediately expose Fahrenheit 911 to be fraudulent. For example: The nonsense about the bin Ladens being spirited out of the country has already been refuted, by none other than master Bush critic Richard Clarke, who took sole responsibility for authorizing the flight (which, by the way, happened after air service had resumed). So which Bush basher is right - Clarke, or Moore? By the by, I completely agree with your outrage over screwed-up inspections at airports. I’ve witnessed little old ladies being scrupulously screened, and I agree – it absolutely shouldn’t be happening. Instead, let’s do it right and profile all Arabic and Palestinian males, say age 15 and up, since they fit the profile of the typical terrorist.

As demagogues always do
the writer of this piece produced this diatribe about a movie that he had not yet seen by attacking the maker with superficial insults that have absolutely nothing to do with the serious issues that effect us all.

The other comments were also copy-cat hangers on who also could not have seen the movie as it was just released on Friday, but no matter to those who already know everything. "PLEASE, Don't bother me with the facts!, No WMD's found. Who cares!, Saudi's flying those planes into the WTC so on 2 days after 911 when all American airspace is closed we let 70 members of the Bin Laden family fly safely out the country back to Saudi Arabia without so much as a glance at their passports and now we make old ladies step out of their shoes and search their pocketbooks in the name of NATIONAL SECURITY! Give me a brake! Wipe the snicker off your face guys, go see the movie, then come back to this blog and tell us about it!

From the reviews I've seen, the movie seems to be earning respect solely for its technical merits, but reviewers are having problems with Moore's credibility and attitude. One likened him to a liberal Rush Limbaugh, letting bombast and carnival-barker sideshow theatrics override the points he's trying to make. Another compared the movie to Nazi propoganda, because like Nazi films it is a highly selective and distorted interpretation of events, presented in a manner designed to overwhelm the viewer and manipulate his or her thinking towards the conclusion desired by the filmmaker.

"Moore is a hateful obese liberal" - why do you people always have to bring in the fact that he's overweight?  That has nothing to do with what he does and it's a personal attack on him.  Why the need to revert to schoolyard insults?

And Moore has never once said (and you can correct me if there's documentation on this and I'll gladly concede the point) that his films are 100% true documentaries.  He has stated that they are movies showing his point of view and the point of view that is not covered in the media.

Moore is a hateful obese liberal who doesn't have a clue about what this nation is about, or the freedoms it protects. Maybe we should take his freedom away to make him realize what defending it really means.

oddly enough
first -- I went too far in a comment to another blog -- I've been guilty of what I want to eschew when we are discussing issues like this.

but if we really want to have a valid discussion we all need to address statements and purported facts.

recite that statement with which we disagree and list the reasons for disagreement and try hard to list facts, etc.

if we want a valid discussion.

I promise I will try.

You're saying that everything Mr. Moore says is false and everything the President says is true? This is why our country is in such a state, with so many blind followers.

And as for being anti-gun, I'd rather be that than anti-homosexual.  Yes, let's worry about gay marriages, because that's more damaging that a child having access to his father's arsenal of "legal" weapons.  I'm glad we have our priorities straight.

I didn't say you shouldn't disagree with anyone, I was just pointing out the all of the hype and all the controversy has been in large part because people are being whiny and loud about it.  If you want to be loud about it, go ahead, but be aware that you're just making the issue worse.

Let me get this straight: when we disagree with anyone, we should just ignore them and keep our mouths shut? Live and let live? Now it is you who are amusing me. That would let the fools and fanatics take over the world. Which they are pretty much doing already. When someone like Mr. Moore starts getting awards for the lying, bigoted trash he puts out, the rest of us had better make our voices heard, regardless of the "consequences." Keeping silent will allow them control us, and that is a consequence far worse than speaking out.

posted by GoldenMean on June 23, 2004 at 11:04 PM | link to this | reply

I think it's funny that the people that make the biggest deal about Mr. Moore are the ones who disagree with him.  Do you realize that if you kept your mouths shut and let him be, there would be less controversy and less media hype?  You people get your panties all in a bundle and start crying to mommy, and this fuels him to plunge ahead and stir up more hornets nests.  I'm all for expressing yourselves, but don't do it and then blame someone else for the consequences of it.
