Drowning Kitties would be my #1 reasons for leaving the lid up.
#2. Are you really worried about dogs licking your face after drinking out of a toilet. If you watch dogs a bit they pretty much lick themselves every where they can. I wouldn't worry too much about toilet water. I think before they had modern toilets that they called Cologne "Toilet Water". By the way ask any man "Why do dogs lick temselves"? You'll get the exact same response from any and all of them.
#3. It's a safety feature for babies. It's much better them sticking stuff down the toilet than into electrical outlets. My brother did that on almost a daily basis until he was thirteen or so. He wasn't real bright.
#4. Yeah you can imagine but you'll have nagging doubts and will be waking up in the middle of the night worried about it.

#1 reason to put down toilet seat
#2 dogs drink out of toliet will lick face
#3 babies stick things down toilet, might not flush
#4 you have to clean the toilet less, because if seat is down you can imagine it is clean!
