You're 100% right. Every word you say is true, Tamara.
But they have no place taking away the thin pennies available for distribution among the hard working, serious contributors here. It's not that the pennies amount to so much; it is that progress here is measured in clicks, popularity and pennies. As you are well aware.
The people who post these things may be paying their monthly bills here, or better, by getting every newbie to click just to find out if anyone's reading what they have to say. Of course with the money and faux-fuzzies coming in, they're going to defend the practice ferociously, as do you.
But even though I asked specifically, you haven't said how you'd feel if everyone here posted their distribution lists and their "My favorite hmm" lists. If they did do that, then how vocal would you be about defending their presence among the legitimate literary contributions?
And even though I asked specifically, you haven't said why you have a problem with putting them aside in their special place, unpaid and uncounted, where they could fulfill every single function you listed in your justifications below.
Those are the issues, dance around them as you wish. Discussion of anything else is futile, you've already won the case for every point you make.
You just can't pull the sucker out of a little kid's mouth, even if it is almost suppertime. They squall every time.
Ted.

Most people post their distribution list in a specific blog designed for that purpose, and most of those are in the "lists and information" category. They have several purposes:
- They show you who your readers are - detailed information so you can tailor your work.
- They introduce you to new readers - people may be searching for Ariala, and find you.
- They act as a networking tool - a reader of a reader, so to speak. "Wow, T99 read "XYZ123" 15 times - let me go check them out, and see what they have to say". Trust me, if I could see who John Grisham or Stephen King or Dorothy Gilman read, I'd buy their books in a heartbeat sight unseen.
- When you ARE offering an opinion, you can tell whether they know what they are talking about - if I say "T99 SUCKS", but my readership shows I've only read ONE post by them (or none!), then what the heck do I know?
- One of the people who posts a "best blogs" blog was only reading about 120 blogs a month. So people asked him - how could you possibly know which are the best blogs if you're not reading the majority of them?
Doesn't mean you need to become a fan, but just because you AREN'T doesn't mean they don't have a valid place here.

Slamming? Sorry to piss you off.
It's a paid subscription service, and I'm not going to debate whether I or anyone else has a right to make suggestions. And as a matter of fact, the whole world is my personal playground. Yours, too. But that's just one more matter of perspective and opinion.
As for the posts which are set up for the single purpose of harvesting clicks -- getting "repeat business," as it's been described -- sorry you don't think I have any right to state my opinion that they don't belong, and that they dillute the pay and rankings of the prose and poetry contributors.
I know you don't get it, so try looking at it this way.
What if every person on this service repeatedly posted his distribution list? Then add to that, every person on this service posting his "Who's my favorite blogger today?" installment.
Think you might finally see the point, then?
Think you might finally decide, "Hey, these things don't really belong here among the contributions of serious writers and thoughtful contributors. They clutter up the place."
I have heard them defended as "reflecting readership, which is just as important as writership," or something to that effect. If that's the case...if that is true...then what's the problem with putting them on a page by themselves for anyone who's really interested in posting and reading them? Where they don't dillute intellectual offerings, nor participate in the ranking and pay processes.
Of course, they wouldn't harvest clicks and pennies that way. Is that the problem?
I perceive it as something akin to littering. A few people doing it, no big deal -- everyone doing it, what a mess. So how would you like it if everyone posted his distribution lists in the general area?
If everyone shouldn't do it, then no one should do it. Problem solved.
Look, all of us have more to offer than getting into a pissing match over differences of opinion. If you want to argue some more or berate me some more or use harsh words like "slam" because I chose to state my opinion, don't look for a reply.
And just because I'm relatively new here, doesn't mean I should shut the f*ck up about what I think and perceive. I've never been one to do that.
No slam intended.
Ted.

Nearly every question here has an answer from the staff - are you reading the comments sections??
Also - just because YOU do not like reading distribution lists doesn't mean other people don't. If you don't like them, I have a suggestion for YOU, ted - DON'T CLICK ON THEM.
Problem solved.
