I have a mind that works.
I have said it before and I'll say it again here, the one truth in the Bible that is worth a damn is this 'Do un to others as you would have them do un to you'. That is an ideal I try to live my life by, and it is not because it is in the Bible. If I am doing something to a person and I think 'Hey, I would not want this done to me' then I know I am doing something wrong. It also works on just about any other level of life. If you do something which you know you would not like done to yourself or your property our anything you cared about, then chances are it is wrong.
I need no book to tell me this logic.
Yes, there are those who can not for whatever reason grasp this concept and that is why we have laws. If they are lacking in the needed mental powers to understand this idea, then the Bible is not going to change that. Most people however do have the ability to think this way if they choose to. the problem is most do not care. So you have to come along and put fear into them, saying they are sinners and will be damned to hell if they do not change their ways. It is much easier than teaching them and working with them to get them to understand. Fear is a very powerful motivation for some people.

Isn't Friar Tuck In Robin Hood?

Kooka, you stated in a comment that to sin is to do something you know to be wrong.  How do you know something to be, "wrong?"  Just curious.

Friar Tuck
By your logic we are not born in sin then? Yet have I not heard time and time again Christians saying we are? Yet just being born is not against God's will nor does it break any rule in the bible. So why is it that we are told we are born of sin?

And no, it is not just a 'theological concept'. I am going to call it Sin if I want to. It is just not sin against god. The term can be used for many other things. A common and in some way better is when a person commits a sin against nature. Like I said, to sin is to do something you know to be wrong.

'Supposing you also believe in God, and you "sin", have you done anything against Him? No, of course not! How can a mortal do anything against God. But the essence of sin -- for us believers -- is this: that with SIN we damage one who is infinitely loved by God.'

That really makes no sense. But then as a parent I am hurt by the idea of my child doing wrong and that causes me harm. Although I am fully willing to forgive my child without my child having to ask me or for either of them to say they love or any of that. I forgive them openly and without expecting anything return. Of course this goes into my ideas that God is a horrible parietal role model and the bottom line that he is just a all around jerk with a serious control problem.

Sin...

is a theological concept.  In other words, if you do not believe in God, YOU DON'T SIN.  Call it "human failing" or something; call it "human weakness."  "Sin" is applicable only to people who who are conscious of a personal relationship with God.  But even if you don't call it "Sin" and opt for "human failure" or "weakness" it is a damage that you cause not only to others, but most of all to yourself.

Supposing you also believe in God, and you "sin", have you done anything against Him?  No, of course not!  How can a mortal do anything against God.  But the essence of sin -- for us believers -- is this:  that with SIN we damage one who is infinitely loved by God.

Religious Science...

teaches that there is no sin we are spiritually perfect. We make mistakes as human beings, but we don't believe in a vengeful God so we don't believe in sin.

I would comment, but Billy Graham just came on... an all-time hero.
