Yes, folks, you really do have to remember...

Save every bit of medical paper your doctor and insurance company produce for tax purposes. This is another great - if overlooked - tax deduction that too many of you miss due to alleged time pressures. Folks, ignoring those medical bills is penny-wise and pound-foolish. What you need to do is keep... Sign in to see full entry.

Is there any real doubt?

Used books have a unique value and should not automatically be dismissed as having little of same. Those of you who are "book snobs" (insisting on paying only full price at the toniest bookstore in town for a relatively limited selection) should wise up and learn what you're missing. Do you realize... Sign in to see full entry.

All right... I'm skeptical.

I have to admit that I'm not the biggest fan of book clubs. Why? I think the reasons are obvious. First of all, those cards one must turn in by a certain deadline are all too easy to forget about sending in. That leads to the second problem - unwanted books. Admittedly, being the avid reader that I... Sign in to see full entry.

"Talk" shows

I'd be wary of allowing children to watch most current talk shows because so many of them feature fighting and present it as normal. I happen to be fortunate - my daughter very rarely watches the "fisticuff" style of talk show. She will occasionally break down and watch Maury Povich, but that's... Sign in to see full entry.

Carrie (Stephen King's first book)

This is the first Stephen King thriller that hit the best-seller lists, about a girl named Carrie White with telekinesis who does indeed ruin her prom night out of a sense of vengeance. To set up the plot of the book a little, Carrie White has been isolated all her life by a mother whose idea of... Sign in to see full entry.

Moving Violations: the autobiography of ABC reporter John Hockenberry

John Hockenberry is a reporter for ABC News who is seen primarily on 20/20 and programs of that ilk, doing what he does best. He has done stories on being a disabled person in the job market in addition to his Gulf War work, and these stories are among the most believable of the investigative-report... Psychic Warrior

David Morehouse's story is the stuff of fiction. It tells his take on the Stargate remote-viewing program sponsored by the Army during the eighties (to the best of my memory). I was not as impressed with this story as I was with other books in this genre, about the same program, but with a more... Sign in to see full entry.

He**, no, I won't go

I don't feel that news on the Web is something one should pay for. Here in Chicago, we had a wonderful link to the Chicago Tribune which was exclusive to Chicago-area AOL members, and which I loved because it was well-organized and provided the same stories as the print version without having to... Enews is much more environmentally sound

Even with the advent of recycling and soy-based inks and other environmentally-friendly innovations, I don't see the need for the printed paper anymore. (This from a certified book junkie - visualize a grin on my face!) The paper industry is just too unfriendly to the environment for my taste.... Sign in to see full entry.

Love, Medicine and Miracles

Bernie Siegel, MD, is revered in the New Age community and has become popular among the general public, which has become tired of medicine as it has traditionally been practiced. This is because he is much more realistic than many New Age healers, who believe that all you have to do is think... Sign in to see full entry.

An Anthropologist on Mars

There is a reason why neurologists and forensic scientists make some of the best writers - their cases are among the most interesting, and they are among the most literate of physicians. Oliver Sacks is no exception. This book provided the second of his works to be made into a major motion picture;... Sign in to see full entry.

How To Be A Perfect Stranger, third edition

(Another one to delete off the Epinions.com database. Besides, I want to practice my copy-and-paste skills.) This is indeed a necessary book, and I am surprised that nobody reviewed this book before. It actually details manners appropriate to each religion's ceremonies - such as how to behave at a... Sign in to see full entry.

The Bible (yes, I wrote a book review of it)

(No way am I going to link to the best-selling book in Western civilization. I just want to get this review out of the Epinions.com database and into someplace where I have at least a shot of making a buck off the review.) The Bible has lasted so long because it is indeed a timeless classic. It has... Sign in to see full entry.

Our Dumb Century: An embryonic book review

(Another Epinion I'm deleting - look at how short this review is. I mean, does it really tell you what I think of the book? I don't think so.) The Onion is a satirical newspaper which is the equivalent of Weird Al in the music world - in other words, if there's a headline about it, The Onion will... Sign in to see full entry.

Shadow Syndromes

(Another Epinion I'm going to delete when I'm through with this entry in this blog.) This book can be both helpful and harmful, depending upon whose ox is being gored. Milder forms of mood disorders have been known for many years and go by the names cyclothymia, dysthymia (mild depression) and... Sign in to see full entry.

(Another Epinion I deleted, on Anatomy of the Spirit.) I wish Caroline Myss would have studied theology to learn what she purportedly talks about in this book. She tries to parallel the seven Catholic sacraments, the sefirot of the Kabbalah, and the seven chakras - obviously a task she does not seem... Sign in to see full entry.

Notes on Why People Don't Heal and How They Can

(This was originally published on Epinions.com, and I'm in the process of migrating all my content over here so I can eventually close out my Epinions.com account. Frankly, I'm earning more money over here on The Blogging Network.) This book was a bit too New Agey for me. It was also a bit "obvious"... Sign in to see full entry.
