JK Rowling fantasizes in literature, creating a world where sex is OK..... Tonight I finished recording the last few chapters of Harry Potter Chamber of Secrets. My students will be able to read the entire book. That may wind up being my best contribution to them for the year. My friend at school... Sign in to see full entry.

These bloggers receive an A+ from Mr. Kingmi.............................

Graduation Day gives me the willies every year. Several students from past years return to demonstrate there acquired language skills. It never ceases to amaze me how quickly new Americans can pick up the languege. It makes me glad that I stressed reading and vocabulary over basic interpersonal... Sign in to see full entry.

New Job on the Horizon for this Blogger?...........

My friend at school, an experienced language arts teacher, has been working to get into ESL teaching. What's not to like? Students are pretty much in awe of the education system, as are their parents; ESL students are well-behaved and show rapid growth when they are taught correctly! It can be very... In the interest of full disclosure, my friend, a math teacher, finally got back to me about my statistics. He says that the difference between the final and initial wordcount should be divided by the initial wordcount. So, the average percent gain is in the four hundreds - not the seven hundreds. At... Hard Data Concluding Robust Gains for ESL

Writing is one form of synthesis called for in Bloom's Taxonomy: the expressive literacy that demonstrates indivudual and collective mastery of language ability. Of interest was rough draft production capacity, validated by the "in-class" composition. No attempt was made to either count errors or to... Sign in to see full entry.

Nautikos -- Here you go, dude! Thanks for the referral!

My thanks goes out to Nautikos for this challenge. I have very easy responses to each one of these complaints. First I would like to validate these assertions made by the author, who is a teacher as I understand it, in Canada. She is absolutely correct. Students have less and less self control,... Blogger reveals Plan.......................................................

Well, I have to admit, I really didn't make up my mind until yesterday what my over-arching strategy was going to be for the last two months of school. It has to be something a little different, it can have a writing component, but it has to be mostly reading. Spring Break usually gives me lots of... Sign in to see full entry.

It is necessary to address this topic again! Burly, my friend: Newcomers to America and lower socio-economic Americans have actually missed their education because teachers refused to teach and reteach them; and because schools refused to make the teachers teach them. We have taken the first giant... Sign in to see full entry.

This Blogger is looking for some gratitude.................................

I had to stop and think this morning, when LittleMsPickles asked me did I enjoy the candies? In a comment to my Valentine's Day blog. Yes, I used the candies to disperse the juvenile delinquency of the afternoon across several hours, so that we could all make it peaceably to the closing bell. But... Sign in to see full entry.

Bloggers spend Valenitne's Day huddled together for survival...............

Yesterday we started with a demonstration of revision. I think it was actually editing. I had found several short essays written by intermediate ESL students -- from a few years back. This is the beauty of having a computer, a district server and an LCD projector. We noticed right away that the... Sign in to see full entry.
