Looking at ourselves and our values

Monday, January 16, marked the official commemoration of the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King. There's a tendency among some Americans to view this as primarily an African-American ethnic holiday. But while this day is especially significant for African-Americans, I think it's important to... Money should not talk

The ever-burgeoning Abramoff scandal is shining a very useful spotlight on a wide variety of illegal and/or unethical practices in Republican-controlled Washington that go well beyond Casino Jack's own nefarious activities. In particular, more attention is finally being paid to the Mother of All... Sign in to see full entry.

2006 Predictions

(1) George W. Bush will continue his bid to enter the Guinness Book of World Records for "Most Frequent Use of the Blame-the-Messenger Strategy (Modern Era)." (2) The administration will see steady "progress" in Iraq, even if the new government's first act is to sign a friendship pact with Iran. (3)... Sign in to see full entry.

What is really going on in Iraq

Here is a comment I got from my last post... "Totally wrong! This vote proves nothing. The Kurds will still operate autonomously in the north, the shiites control the south, and in the middle the sunnis have a bunch of sand. There is no national sense of Iraq as a country. As an example, in the US... Sign in to see full entry.

Democracy in the Middle East

We may not know for weeks exactly what kind of government Iraqi elections produced, but the fact that they were successfully held, with relatively little violence, and with an extraordinary turnout among Arab Sunnis as well as Kurds and Shi'a, is unmistakably good news. The Arab Sunni participation,... Sign in to see full entry.

Bush's greatest moral failure - Compassion Conservatism

The challenge is global health inequity. Only a fraction of the billions spent on medical research targets illnesses that affect poor countries, even though these same illnesses account for 90 percent of the world's disease burden. Each year some 10 million children die before their fifth birthday... Sign in to see full entry.

Center for Cures at NIH

One of the few really new and big ideas to come out of the 2004 presidential campaign was Sen. Joe Lieberman's proposal to create an American Center for Cures within the National Institutes for Health, providing a focal point and "driver" for efforts to cure major chronic diseases like diabetes,... Let's get serious about the climate

Right now officials from around the world are meeting in Montreal for a new round of negotiations on common measures to address global climate change. Yet the world's largest economy and most powerful nation will be represented only by "observers," thanks to the Bush administration's go-it-alone... Sign in to see full entry.

Opening up primaries to independents

The last statistic I saw had 37% of voters saying the were Democrat and 37% saying they were Republican, which if I know my math leaves 26% being independent. This also means that 26% of voters who might want to vote in the primary cycle cannot. Is this truly representitive of how the electorate... Sign in to see full entry.

Fighting Bush's Iraq Mistake the right way

President Bush unveiled a "plan for victory" to shore up sagging public confidence in his Iraq policies. Though it broke little new ground, the president's speech at the U.S. Naval Academy did provoke an unfortunate reaction from House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, who endorsed Rep. John Murtha's...
