Ribbons, Ruffles and Pleats for Growing Girls

As my daughters grow quickly out of their clothes, I remain busily at my sewing machine, both altering old clothes and making new ones. We do purchase plenty of clothes at the store, but the sizes are a bit deceiving. Therefore, I've attempted to locate styles that are larger, yet can be taken in at the waist line to last much longer. A skirt that is far too large can simply be pleated. Then, the item will be "come-pleated." Another solution to my growing girls (I didn't have this problem with... Sign in to see full entry.

A note regarding my new book "Panorama of the Enlightenment"

After viewing all of the masterful works of art included in this lovely book by Dorinda Outram, I turned to the last pages, where my eye was at first deceived by the whimsical two page mural of sorts that an artist had added as a final comment to the styles of the times. The book had been composed of various portraits of nobility and other folk in many beautiful forms of dress. Even the ladies in an apparently modest setting were dressed better than the church going ladies of a more rushed time.... Sign in to see full entry.

Who was this strange woman who gave me cats and took my furniture?

We had worked together for a time at the ballroom dance studio. I thought it very strange how homely she was for a dance instructor. Very nice, of course, but homely as all get out. It was an unfortunate time of transition for me. My dad had suffered serious heart attacks, and my schooling had suffered due to my new outlook on life. I was determined not to work myself to death, and in the process became a bit too casual in my approach to living. Anyway, our fellow dance instructor, J~, had a... Sign in to see full entry.

Never Marry in a Time of Weakness

When a woman is going through a time of weakness in her life, marriage should be the last thing on her mind so far as planning is concerned. A marriage in such circumstances opens the door to the worst of abusers and further weakens a woman's position in her society. Whether or not we are experiencing a time of weakness is, of course, our own decision, and no one else's. We simply must not allow other's to decide for us just when we are and are not strong. What a woman must pursue instead is an... Sign in to see full entry.

My Theory: Rock 'n' Roll is the Direct Result of Automotive Noise Pollution

As a classical musician, I have a great appreciation for all sorts of music, most especially the music created before there were cars. Why classical? Because music has always been a reflection of our surroundings. Music was formerly a reflection of nature. But in these times of automotive everything, nature cannot be heard over the din of traffic. Everyone knows and complains (when active as a complainer) that traffic and noise pollution are flaws in our society that truly stink. My stepfather,... Sign in to see full entry.

Dye jobs fry your hair? Eh, what's up, Doc?

Never again! Never before and never again. I can barely get a brush through my hair. I've applied conditioners and detanglers. I've bought $17 hair products. My brushing arm is suffering a dull, constant pain from the daily effort. Hair is being pulled out every time I brush it, landing all over the floor and wadding into my brush. I've never had this kind of trouble with my hair in my entire life! So, after it has grown out about two inches, I've cut my bangs and got the worst of the dye job... Sign in to see full entry.

Sleeping Baby

I am trying to be quiet while the baby takes her nap. The new Princess Bonnie Elizabeth sleepeth soundly after grumping all morning long. Therefore, I linger here at the keyboard and read some, although I've been on mental vacation from my writing ever since Christmas. I'm sure something will occur to me eventually. I should create a few math and word sheets for the girls is what I should do. I attempted to do a word a day blog here, just in case my educational rounds are lacking, but I found I... Rise Above the Machines

While it is the task of many to create and perfect machines, it is the responsibility of others to rise above them. The subservient member of society who relies too heavily upon the cold, regular workings of a machine is in danger of being overrun by that machine. The physical tools created by man do not discriminate between product and producer. Folks who regularly work with machines must stay safely out of their way. If, for instance, our financial machines have calculated the best financial... Sign in to see full entry.

Studying for Design

They say everyone has their own style, but this may become less true as women and personal taylors diminish. I've noticed in recent years that the clothes sold in stores are often overtly retro or appear to be used. This could be due to a shortage of new designers and creators at home. When I study to create a new dress, I watch everyone and everything around me in interesting clothing, but most of my ideas are gleaned from the entertainment industry, where the exciting new production of our...
