AA is a Blessing

I just want to make sure that no one gets the wrong idea that I am against AA or any 12 step programs. I am not. I am totally supportive of 12 step programs. Their biggest gift is their insight that separation from the divine is the root problem behind addictions. (my interpretation). I was shcked... Sign in to see full entry.

Addiction is a Myth

So back to my premise that additction is an outmoded myth. By myth, I certainly do not mean false. I mean it is a model of reality that we have accepted deep in our collective psyche. It is how we measure and relate to certain behaviours which we label bad or wrong. Try this. Suspend judgemnet about... Sign in to see full entry.

A new paradigm for addiction continued

If I am 100% responsible for everything I have created in my life, then I have 100% ability (with God's help) to alter what I have created. I am not implying that this is easy by any means. I can envision a treatment center where addictions can be overcome by this model. Participants would be taught... Sign in to see full entry.

Beyond the addiction model: a way of soul healing

Ok, here I go. I hope I am up to the task, since much of what I have to say is beyond words. As the Sufi's say: "It cannot be taught, but it can be taught!" You have to experience it to believe it. First, I want to share some assumptions upon which this model is resting, because if you disagree with... Sign in to see full entry.

Moving Beyond the Addiction Model

We need only look at the history of alcohol abuse to see how the addiction model fits in humanity's growing compassion toward itself. There was a day when those who abused alcohol were considered "drunks" and "bums". Along came the more compassionate view that alcohol abuse was a dis/ease which... Sign in to see full entry.

My informal survey: sexual addiction is a reality

In speaking with friends and aquaintances over the last week, and overwhelming majority agree that sexual addiction is a reality. Many admitted to struggling with sexual addiction personally (mostly males). At the very least, I must conclude that sexual activity can be out of control just like any... Sign in to see full entry.

Comment on numbing pain

Do people use sex to numb pain? Sure. Any pleasure tends toward numbing (replacing) pain. So what's the point. The point is that if sex is used exclusively to numb pain, then one is not really connecting with a partner and one is not really making love. At that point, we are just eating an ice cream... Asexuality, an addiction?

I want to comment on the comment to my last post. Can people be addicted to not having sex? I do not think we call that an addiction. I think we have another label for that. We call it "fear" or "dysfuncton" or something like that. Nevertheless, I agree with the commentator, that it is selfish and... Sign in to see full entry.

Sexual Addiction: The Nature of Addiction Continued Part 2

Ok back to the nature of addiction. In order for something to be considered an addiction, it must begin to interfere with the ability of one to manage their life. Can sexual involvement actually cause someone to mis-manage or lose control over their life? I would have to answer: "Certainly! I have... Sign in to see full entry.

I see I struck a chord

So let's explore what addiction is. First, it may be helpful to say what it is not. It is NOT an excuse to avoid taking 100% responsibility for our own behavior! It does have to do with doing things that either harm ourselves or others (actually we harm both even when we think we are just harming... Sign in to see full entry.
