What a shame that they couldn't afford glasses for her! But that taught her the lesson of making sure you had one. Bless her heart.

I always admired your mother. What a hell of a life folk led I cannot imagine a Father being so mercenary, She had to be tough or go under.

Good Afternoon

Pat, I would have loved to know your Mom.  I believe that learning is so important for everyone.  Thank goodness things have changed and everyone that wants one can get a decent education.  When I was growing up the library was one of my favorite places to go.  I would take out as many books as I could and took them home.  I'd read every page and return them when they were due.  I really believe there are so many things we can learn on our own if we set our minds to it. Your mother was a gem and her knowledge far exceeded what she learned in school.  She had the ability to learn on her own.

My granddaughter Natasha is getting a 4.0 this year.  She's 15 and is involved in sports and other activities at school.  I'm so thankful she has had the chances that she has.  All my grandchildren love school.  I'm very thankful for their education.

Good morning

You are the daughter of one amazing woman. What a treasure she must have been during your growing-up years. The right books have that special way of teaching us about our world when the words are comprehended. Her sayings are keepers. I can imagine that she would have gone very far had she have not been stopped in her tracks. That was once a woman's lot in life. Education was only for men. Thank goodness we got past that serious issue of human ignorance.

Your mom was proof that formal education is not all that defines capability or knowledge. My mom was also disappointed in her education, getting a degree in home economics was far from her real goal, a degree in biology. She only went to college because her father, against educating mere females, died. But circumstances--marriage, motherhood, and sudden widowhood--prevented her from earning the last 3 credits for the biology degree. I never knew she had earned any degree until years later, when I found the certificate. She could clean a house down to the foundations, and was an exceptional gourmet cook... but ashamed that she was not a credentialed biologist.

Your mother's step-father was, at least in denying her the glasses, was mean.
