It always has been presented as such, since news criers and propogandists and advertisers have jumped up on soap boxes. The problem is greater now maybe because there is less actual knowledge and education, less critical thinking, more desire to believe whatever someone wants to believe... More suckers, and less trust in authority in a world where anyone can claim to be an expert.
