Pat

Your mother was a gardener before her time. I have always admired her fortitude.

It sounds like the watering of plants is tedious...Rejection is one of the most painful things a heart has to feel next to the death of a loved one.

The last line saved the poem for me. I was thinking - hmm, over-analyzing the poor girl a bit - then out comes the real reason! Very pretty blooms!

We had a long driveway and Mom would plant marigolds all along the side of it.

My mother used marigolds as a border plant - something about their

bitter odor kept the rabbits away from her veggies. She also scattered blood meal, which scared them and became good fertilizer. I like their bright colors, especially next to frothy white alyssum.
