Re: anib
Yes I expect we have always been viewed as a wealthy country but like others there were deep contrasts.

Re: Corbin
I suppose for the wealthy it was glamorous , for the poor it was hard drudgery
I remember an old man telling me the owner of a large factory stopped him as he was finishing work after a 12 hour slog. He said to him Smith you are working too many hours I do not want to see you buying cottages off of my back.

Re: RPresta
RP. I am touching up a few older poems and of course I was often with older folk when young and they loved telling tales.

Those were the tough days back then. Modern medicine has helped us a lot tremendously since then...A very nice poem you have shared with us.

Strong women indeed.... sometimes when you look back you realise that the struggles you face are smaller than the one's your ancestors faced.God bless them.
Beautiful poem.

Such a fascinating post. Thank you so much for sharing your story. The luck turns and we get what is left sometimes. A real shame, yet you preserve. And one of your most delightful poems! I really enjoyed reading it.

Families are such tangles sometimes... and wisdom may be passed down, but sometimes it skips a generation or two, and what hard work is gained, is lost. Henry VI, as example...

Sounds like there were some strong survivors among your ancestors,
especially the women - trying to hold the world together with nothing but grit and endurance. Wow!
