you could try one of the new traps I bought some from Amazon one does not have to touch the mouse and it does not catch the poor little things by the leg. Of course the trap has to go under something that the cat cannot reach.

Alas, I also hate mint. I wonder if they'd hate wintergreen. I can live with wintergreen. Right now, things are mostly clorox-scented.

Rooting for Embers to get better, and as for the mouse in the house...
did you know they hate the scent of mint? You could put peppermint extract in a spray bottle - mix a tsp or so with half a cup of water - and spray all the interior cabinet doors, the areas where they've come in. Ants also hate mint. I've bought a few Tom Cat traps at the big box home stores, they use peanut butter for bait. And Embers can't get hurt by those. You just throw them away, never touch the dead rodent....
