CCT

This is very poignant and powerful, precisely because it is so sparingly drawn...

Re: I was the oldest of the 2nd batch of mom's kids, so I was told stories

I think the worst problem growing up was lack of food, they went 6 weeks without money after the father was killed. Neighbours were good but of course they were all in the same boat. Your mother was a brave woman.

Re:Kabu

Times were hard in the villages there was only farm work part time usually. Men spent spare time in the pubs. War was appealing for a start until the reality of lice and filth. `Mum always said she couldn't really show love like most mothers because she had never known what it was like.

Re:blackcat

Well we have a lady Prime minister . She says she can be a bloody awkward woman.

I think it would be about two weeks if all women were in charge.

Re: C_C_T

I suppose it was just a common factor RP. People were poor because of childbirth and usually money was spent by the father on drink to find oblivion.

The timing of when children are born does affect things. For instance, I am the only one who has memories of my maternal grandmother's father while my sister and cousin do not...Kids had to make major sacrifices in those days to support one's family.

The tale tells us the resilience of women which by far, are beyond men to endure. She was indeed a brave lady.

It's never boring to hear the stories of those who came before us. Your mother has one of the most tragic stories I've heard. How very sad for a children to endure such things. Thank you for sharing.

My parents' stories of their lives and of our ancestors, never ever bored me.  I eve loved the same tales told over and over.  My siblings were't really like me.  That's why everyone is always asking me geneology questions and dates and memories.

such a different time though women still have more burdens than men... I wonder how long it will take before we rule the world?  :)

I was the oldest of the 2nd batch of mom's kids, so I was told stories

too. None so pitiful as your mom's tenure with the Captain, though. Maybe that time in history was just tougher for the children.  Well told, CC.

Your poor little Mother. Just her luck that she would catch the \robin instead of the mouse. I don't much like living with mice either and being lonely and miserable poor little girl.
