Re: adnohr,

If you are looking towards a spiritual answer, I'd point to what we are here for, and suggest that human beings have a far more complex curriculum than most animals: We have complicated choices to make, and little instinct to guide us, or limit us.

In anthrozoological terms (that's the field my daughter Marika just got her Master's in) I would say that anyone with a mind, which includes most if not all animals,  still have instinct to control many responses to what the world offers, but are still, as individuals, particularly those with personality, capable of deviating from from Nature's design. Those we keep beside us, sharing our lives and decisions and behaviors may also substitute what they learn from us from what would come naturally to them in the wild.

The freer a mind is, the more capable of unexpectedness it is, even to the point of insanity.

That's my theory.

Human nature! Animals seem more sane most of the time.

I read the book so long ago when I first found it in the library.  Of course I had to watch the film later when it came out.  I've never seen a theater production of it.

Yes, great theater. I saw a show on PBS that said there is a possibility the wheat the townsfolk in Salem had used had become tainted, causing hallucinations. Can't vouch for the veracity of that theory. Truth and untruth, sifting fact and non-fact, contemplation and conclusion; all interesting processes.

Superstition , I suppose it is still with us, but hopefully most folk understand on what it is based. Soon be on the road I suppose.

Funny (strange not ha-ha) the plot of The Crucible put me in mind

of the political scene in Washington DC, baseless accusations, ulterior motives, lots of hubbub and disbelief...
