your question raises another: why is charity big business in USA? Even CEOs

of non-profits exceed what secular business CEOs get for annual compensation. But oberhaeads for charities come from donations intended to help the poor, not py salaries of middle class career-opportunists. That's why more food is thrown out than sent to the poor, because we will NOT break barriers toward waste. Economically waste & fraud & accidents/mistakes are good for the GDP!! shalom

Good questions! I think what Kirkpatrick was alluding to was the need of the human being to be of service to others! Although her statement appears callous it is in fact just a statement with an underlying purpose, to do the work of the Lord! It seems like the poor are the sacrifical lambs but in that perhaps they are; for Christ was the most sacrifical of all! I believe we should strive to end poverty and pestilence no matter if it is a losing battle, it's just the right thing to do! Just my thoughts her for I could be off by a mile! As far as spiritual enlightment is concerned, religion, the vehicle,  could be discarded because I believe the association with the Lord is well beyond the vehicle!!! It's another level so to speak and it's not about how one got there but reaching the destination!  Shelly

That's such an interesting question to raise..... the means to an end have been a point of discussion always as ideologies, beliefs, interests vary. On a lighter note, let poverty end, one can always find another 'cause' to'serve'...
