Re: Re: Kabu,

Ah distance. That is what I think living here. That I probably have better quality time with my family when I get back to Australia than if I lived in Australia but in another State, just had a weekend or two once ot twice a year.

Re: CCT,

Some people regard magpies as pest birds, but I like them.  They are beautiful to look at, and less shy than other birds. This one was small, so I assume young, and seemed not the least bit concerned about the parade of humans going by.

The blue flowers next to the bare tree photo are flax, and the purple ones are vetch... The spray of white ones is a tree blossom. I don't know the yellow ones by name. The other blue ones look like some sort of bluebell.

Knowing the names is like making friends of them.

Re: jeansaw,

It was a really grand weekend!

My middle-kid is full of enthusiasm and energy, and she kept us doing one thing after another... in four days, we ate out several times, ate in very well, too, and visited the Garden of the Gods and the Bear Creek Dog Park, saw 2 movies... Oh, and Charlie's graduation!

His dad would be content to sit and read, which, frankly, drives me a bit crazy.

Re: Naut

Magpies seem to be a bird of the West, of the Great Plains.  They share an ecological niche with crows, I think. But we have those, too.

Next time you are struck with travel-lust, try the American Southwest. These rocks are just the beginning! Head for Denver, then come down to Colorado Springs to see the Garden, and Pike's Peak...  Then westerly on I-24, then cut north to I-70 and hang a left...  That road will take you through some of the most spectacular geology and scenery anywhere... Left on I-15, where 70 ends, will take you down into the region of Bryce Canyon and Zion, and thence, on south to the Grand Canyon.  Loop back east and north through Monument Valley, Mesa Verde, Canyonlands, Arches... The back road from Moab back up to 70...  Colorado Monument...  And east again on 70 with a side trip to Colorado Springs again to tell me how you liked it. Three-four weeks should do it.

Re: Kabu,

It really has been a good and memorable one!  Rare, too, considering how far apart we all are.

Re: Pat, thanks!

Garden of the Gods is a nice little concentration of how amazing it's going to be, the further west you go from here. And depending on the time of day, the weather and which way you're facing, the light changes everything.

Lovely photos Ciel . I always feel a bit sentimental about Magpies, I had one as a boy it was a baby and would have been shot by the old farmer. I like your flowers I don't know or can't remember the names of them. So nice to have the family amiable together.

Ciel

Great photos, especially some of those amazing rock formations! And it reminded me that we don't seem to have any magpies around here, and I have no idea why not...

I enjoy showing people places that are new to them. I never get tired of seeing the looks on their faces...I have heard a lot of good things about Bonefish Grill.

I think the Garden of the Gods is the most memorable place I've been - the light there
is amazing as I remember it. I was there with my kids in 1970, didn't ever want to
leave. Loved Manitou Springs, too. Your photos are almost better than being there
because I can look as long as I want and the bird doesn't fly before I soak it all in.

Re: Annicita,

It is one of those excellent things about living here: Garden of the Gods is about 5 miles away, and can be enjoyed in many weathers and every season.

I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did...there weren't many people there so double enjoyment

Re: adnohr,

Many thanks! I will pass along your congratulations to Charlie. I'm glad he brings your friend into your thoughts, once again demonstrating one of the ways people connect with one another.

That's one of my favorites, too. I do love a fine tree!

Re: dsm tchr,

Thanks so much!

Its amazing what one can do with a photo-edit program, too.  I generally bring the highlights way down and contrast up from a little to a lot, to get clarity and true tone. Reducing highlights also makes skies and clouds more dramatic. Increasing contrast can intensify colors that don't look right, so a subtle adjustment of hue and/or saturation will help that.

Heck, I just fiddle until it looks right!

Beautiful pictures. Especially like the #9131. Charlie's picture reminds me of a dear friend - he was a writer and one of the nicest persons I have ever known. Congratulations to him on the graduation! Marika is the dog trainer, right?

Ciel, what contrasts you achieved in the good light at the park. And those colors! Excellent!
