The more I read you, the more I know I don't want to write any books.  But, I can tell that you actually have fun with those details.

Yes piped water was in this town 1900 pumped up to a large water tower . My dad once told me they had it installed and he was the first to scramble in to use the system. Strangely enough the old bucket system was still in operation because of some mean landlords about 35 years ago.

Pat, you can't beat that attitude to accept picky comments from professionals.

I know that there were running water toilets back in the times of the Greeks and Romans and such and allthroughout written history. I am sure that big cities in the US had flush toilets.

Women did make a choice not to marry. Spometimes it was over ridden by a ruling Father but when they saw how MOthers and sisters suffered with a birth every year and then having to bury child after child that died of disease etc, yes some did quietly decide to be the drudge of the family, helping parents and sisters always. Or they became a Nun. I can myself understand a 12 year old making that decision...but then I never did fit into a box so perhaps the other women's advice is good here....No. No I like her independent attitude.

Pat

I remember an uncle who owned a house built in the late 1890s, and it had flush toilets, with a big water tank suspended over the toilet itself. To operate it you pulled a chain with a very decorative porcelain handle...

A great idea it is to share your work with others to get feedback.

I expect that the decision never to have children

has occured to women through all the cultures and ages that have been: they simply couldn't enforce the decision due to other stronger forces in their realities.
