The historian, Barbara Tuchman, made the same point regarding the bloody-mindedness of adolescence and of adolescents who were raised without compassion or affection, and put in places of power at 15. I think it took a woman to pick up on that side of human history: the consequences of raising children without love, in a basically indifferent world.

You're right about believability being the biggest of deals
when it comes to characterization. I remember reading "Ender's Game" years ago and thought it was interesting because the little boy didn't know he was running the war to end all wars - he thought he was playing a computer game. I remember thinking that writer did a good job of creating manipulative adult characters, and also thinking it was a lot to expect of a little kid, putting the fate of civilization on his shoulders.
Have not seen the movie, but I seem to remember reading that "Ender" is 13 or so in the movie, which means he'd not have been so naive about what was really going on. And if my view of 13-year-olds is anything like accurate, some people that age go through a phase of vindictive rebelliousness and love for violence without having a concept of consequence. So maybe the screenwriters wanted an anti-hero who could sell tickets to the young adult audience.

I agree, it is pointless to read a book to the end if it just doesn't pull you into it's world. I often read to evade boredom, and it makes no sense to read a book that bores me.

I haven't started a new book for quite some time now. I have one that I read halfway through and then fell by the wayside. The bookmark is still in place, but I doubt if I will finish it. I don't know whether it is a problem with me, or with the books. I need one that grabs me and holds on to the end.
