What a lovely young bride! I love the idea of having two weddings, to celebrate and honor both traditions and cultures (plus, it means twice the cake!)

I believe that's what may be referred to as a "culture clash," and it's a shame because it stands to upset the lives of two people. Hopefully they can get past that, and these two wonderful people can go on with their lives . . .

She looks lovely, I hope the dowry doesn't grow into some bone of contention

Funny how we hang onto traditions that no longer have meaning.

My writing friend Martha's son just married an Indian girl, same two-wedding scenario. The clothing, the fabrics, they're all so beautiful - I hope the silks and embroideries continue to be traditional for years to come. But dowries? Gimme a break!

Very nice...

Yes, very nice!
I wish them the best and I hope the hurdles of the past can give them a little freedom for "thier" future. I can't imagine the man "actually" expecting a dowry in today's times.. He might ought to be lucky to accept a wedding (in today's times)!!

:)

When Son #1 was in the Navy and spending lots of time at Subic Bay, The Philipines, he had a girlfriend that desperately wanted to marry him and come back to the US with him.  But, her father expected a carabao (water buffalo) for dowry, and that was quite daunting to son.  Her father already had one, and after riding it once, son couldn't imagine trying to use something like that for exchange for a wife.

Culture shock...

He's probably been hearing those coins clink for years, counted on it, and is deeply disappointed. I hope he can get over it.

So good that there are others in the groom's family who can truly celebrate the wedding and the couple, without worrying over that.

It is amazing how fast they grow up...That is something about the dowry. Too bad he cannot understand that it is not done in Australia.

Kabu

She is a sweet and pretty bride. Everything is so different now in all areas of life. He will get over it or be angry for a very long time.

Ah - another couple who marries twice. My son did the same, once in Japan, and then here in Canada.Your bride looks sweet - is that the bridal dress she wore in India? My friend who just came back from touring that country was raving about all the beautiful, bright colors of the clothing.
