I figured we needed to be prepared for the end of our civilization

back in the 70s.  The Greeks of ancient times expected it.  I imagine the earliest civilizations had the same fear.

It can't hurt to know how to grow and store food and get used to the idea that someday, the toilet paper really will run out.

Re: jimmy

yes i agree it depends on the circumstances, and yes i watch and read to much about post-apocalyptic earth. but then i think it interesting how people have managed throughout the ages. and i think it will come down to the people that know how to cooperate to carry on.

Re: I agree with your philosophy on this. What good would it do you to be

yes pat that is another really good point, i dont know how long a sole survivor would last i think they would use one of those bullets on themself, before they ate all the food.

Re: cc

funny i think the privileged will be the first to go, they may have the most saved up, but i dont think they will have the heart to tough things out.

Wow, what a topic! It seems as though you've been watching too many post-apocalyptic science-fiction movies!  I also agree that guns will probably not help too many people in such a scenario. I believe that most people have an inherited, base survival instinct, and might be able to live off the land if needs be. However, I also believe that that might depend on whatever the exact circumstance was that caused the situation in the first place! If it's a post-atomic war world we'll be inheriting, there will be too much radiation poisoning throughout the lands, and no one will survive anyway!

there is enough to worry about why find somethingn new if it happens then it happens

I could those people end up inheriting it all in the future...

I agree with your philosophy on this. What good would it do you to be

the sole survivor, sitting on your supply of food and bullets when everyone you ever cared about is gone?

I think the example of having people that are assets instead of storing those things that can be an asset to be more appeasing, too! sam

Oh wow!  I don't think we are heading that direction....we've been in worst situations before but have always found our way back to prosperity....I would like to think we are able to do it again.  If not then yes I think those who know how to make do with what they have and know how to live off the land have the greatest chance of survival....you can eat a gun .... and despite what the movies show you can sure kill to get what you want...but what happens when you have killed everybody who has it and you don't know how to live off the land just to shoot a gun?

I expect the wisest thing would be not to let anyone know of the store of food. It is a long time to wait for a corn cob if one is starving. I don't think many would be immune except the privileged.
