Re: CCT,

Scent holds memories and associations like nothing else. What a lovely find for you, more than just an old blouse.

And now I have the good stuff, am not at all sad!

I was sorting through a cupboard and found  a blouse of my Mother's strangely it still held a soft comforting scent, so I pushed it back for someone else to deal with. I agree SS articles can rust these days. Perhaps they just coat them with a layer.Rather sad for you.

It is very difficult to get rid of stuff with sentimental value.
It is also difficult to get rid of stuff given as gifts from children and grandchildren even if it's stuff that you would not choose for yourself.

Re: Annicita,

Yes, and reading some of the old newspapers... a New York Times front page from July, 1985...  some comics from the Denver Post just a few years ago, when my sister must have re-wrapped some things...  Local papers from the NJ area where grew up.

Re: Adnohr,

You and Naut are right, the memories are far more important than the housekeeping! There is something kinda wonderful about making tea in the old pot I haven't seen in 40 years, the one Mom and I sometimes shared for afternoon tea.

Oh, no!! Now you've reminded me that I still have to go through my mom's stuff, all those boxes down in the garage......darn! I agree with Nautikos though - it's not necessarily the stuff, but all the memories tied to it.

Re: Naut.

Right... you know what stuff to keep that way, and what to pass on to the kids, and what to donate to someone else who will add their intangibles to it.

It's never the visible, tangible stuff itself, really, but the invisible 'stuff' sticking to it, the memories, even the small, seemingly insignificant ones that one had long since forgotten, but which suddenly emerge again, awakened by that stuff...

It's why we keep that kind of thing: in the objects lie the magic

memory triggers that bring back moments we'd otherwise never remember. Sentimental value? Oh, yeah!
