They would cut back the tree and wait for a period of time before harvesting but I can't remember how long it is, two years, maybe three but three seems too long! sam

All your info is right of course, but the question is focusing on coppicing.  Bark was just a clue.

answer is the inner bark of several different trees and has been used since

forever and first came from Sri Lanka.
