A fascinating period of history it was. Like LustorLove I find that it seems that things have not changed much.

A little touch of history, but have things really changed that much?

I love history, but aren't humans pitiful sometimes....always fighting and killing and getting revenge.

Very enlightening, dear Kabu. I knew there was a celebration where effigies were burned, but I never knew the story behind the holiday. So true that not much has changed with violence and governments!

I hope I can still have have my bonfire after all this. I am going to start this morning as it as you suggested wet. this is not good news people tend to postpone and fireworks are drawn out over longer periods . How about this Kabu my brother said he saw a box where one lit the whole package it lasted an hour with a supposedly diverse array, Ahem price 90 pounds sterling. Fancy a carrot, a bunny joke.

Horrible, but interesting.  I am with the Aussie's in thinking the man was alright to want to get rid of that type of govt, though misguided in his approach. Am really sorry that happened to him.  They were so extreme in good and bad all at once back then.

Very interesting, Dear Kabu!
You write it so well. One man's terrorist is another's hero I guess. Just wish humanity could evolve out of violence...

Oh well it is time to get rid of all them!

Thank you, Kabu for sharing this history lesson with us.  Our history does have a way of repeating itself...your right, the names just change.  Conspirator's are now the terrorist

The UK has a wonderful (from a writer's standpoint) history of
odd personalities. Here's this cultured gentleman with a certain superior attitude and a very high opinion of himself -- a captain of industry. Beneath the veneer he's cold hearted and selfish. So many in Brit Lit and on BBC programs are marvelously twisted and dark behind the facade of manners and rituals of proper society. I especially love the ironic comedies and the underhanded digs at the royals, the prime minister and parliament that crop up in shows like Fawlty Towers, etc.
