An outstanding guard cat!! Perhaps it would be wise to proceed with caution since it could be a bear or something like one.  They are known to be getting closer to humans as their habitat is dwindling.

I shouldn't worry too much, it's probably just a small hairy mutant dwarf or something

Kabu, last night was our coldest night so far at 43F...
The leaves are all still green, but a cold spell of nights will change that...sounds like you must have had a small bear checking your place out as you've ruled out other possibilities...between now and when the animals hunker down for the winter, you never know what to expect....

I'm glad Mr Graysome can sniff danger at a distance Kabu.

So Mr. G. had turned into a guard-cat! Good thing with Mr. WIley sleeping so soundly! I would go for the porcupine idea too - pretty sure a bear cub would be too big by now.

Perhaps it was a black rabbit, Kabu. They are very fierce if one leaves carrots lying around.

My advice would be to search for any do,do, or leave a patch of sand to capture paw prints.

Or get a surveillance camera, if you do not fancy guard duty. Do you want my potato spell to ward off rabbits?

my cat does the same thing, but fortunately we dont have any wild animals roaming our yard, unless you want to call the neighbors wild

I would not want to deal with a bear, EITHER! I join you in hoping there is not a return visit! sam

Your cat sounds very interesting. I still think about Nermol sometimes and hope there are cats in heaven :)

Cat is getting worse what with his running all over the land outside with those 3 hawks hanging around love.

there have been people living on this particular piece of land for 110 years and it was totally inhabited by Cherokee so domesticated animals are mostly what we have in our immediate neighborhood. My poor kitty would not do well she wants to play with anything that comes by. I love Mr Graysom.

Its rare to have a baby bear so early in the Fall... specially only one and running around already,  most likely it was something like  a porcupine... do you have those around there?  in my cabin in the mountains of upstate NY there are some porcupines the size of medium size pigs... they also appear black in the twilight and enormous!  But more likely it was a racoon... they are very fresh and adventure close into the porches and verandas.  I had a family of them in my yard in Miami Beach , Mama, Papa and three cute babies.  They used to come to the glass doors of my dinning room, put their faces nest to the glass  and actually put their little paws around their eyes to diminish the glare of our indoor lights to be able to see inside  loll.  They are the cutest things!  That is until they start turning your garbage cans upside down and ripping the bags loll...  Just be careful just in case sweetie... Mama bears are pretty possesive of their cuties :-)  xoxoxo

Bears will soon be napping for the winter, so if this critter
comes back after snowfall, it ain't a bear. Might have been a hedgehog. Or maybe one of your gnomes had a visit from a little gnomey pony... Nice to have a watch cat to keep away the creepies...
