No kidding about those stamps
It definitely makes me think twice before I mail anything.

I hardly mail anything as it is, and to run to the post office for an updated stamp (as it seems they raise the price so often) is just not economical.

Yes FSI, the Post Office just ramps up when the holiday packages are com'n through. Technology is constantly and quickly changing everyday.

The Decline of a Postal Service
True..the reason I do e-mail and pay bills online is because I think the price of a stamp is outragious.  So I am fighting back my way/LBJ

It definitely is on the downward trail.  We shall see what we shall see.  I still have to stand in line when I need to make a trip to the Post Office.

The decline would not really be that significant FSI I think cos important documents and letters are still posted and need proof of post.

I still prefer a hand written letter to an e-mail. I like writing letters too, but it's so easy to write an e-mail.

I'm sure that's why postage stamps keep rising.

I still use the postal service but no where near what I used to! And, I understand in 2011 they will stop Saturday deliver! sam

I wish this wouldn't happen. Cos there was something good about the
stamps and the snail-mail as they call it now.

I think Tzippy makes a good point. They will have to change/add services to stay in business in this age of technology.

Re: our Canadian Postal Service has gone much the same way....

and yet they still give a huge break for junk mail.  I have long said that they should be paying us to receive unsolicited bulk mail!

And people forget that the Postal Service was used as an instrument

of oppression and control.  So they had it coming to them.

Now we need to work on wresting our internet connections from the oppression and control of national companies!

It's much the same in the UK
Many Post Offices have been closed which is bad enough for the mail service but they were also key community hubs for outlying hubs and isolated communities. In many cases they now have nothing. We're more connected as we become more disconnected I think.

and the service still gets worse and worse

I am on my way to the post office lol
I dont see it as a decline, I see it as a changover, they will just have to change their services to keep up with the times. People still will have to send packages, and originals, etc etc. thei bigger problem here is that gov run institutions always fail, But someone should tell Obama that.

FSI, Probably will be privatized, along with NASA, federal prisons, schools, etc.

I think they will have to deliver other things at the same time FS. newspapers etc. prescriptions for the home bound. The milk men that are left deliver most things these days. One has to think ahead all the time or be overtaken by events.

our Canadian Postal Service has gone much the same way....

Its between 40-50 cents to mail a first class letter - one might as well just make a "Hi, how are you?" phone call or email....

I could easily see our government trying to outsource pachaged mail to private companies in a feeble effeort to save money....

they have no idea that they are killing their own jobs off
it is the same in Canada and Australia. and forme to send a letter to Australia..it can take two weeks ...I can send emailor ring and get instant reply. crazy .
