Re:Northsage 45. I am a bit confused, just what does a DNA kit test FOR?
In this case it is meant for people who would like to find out where their ancestors came from. As Magic Moon wrote, somebody in her family took such a test and found such information. Yes, the results could perhaps be exploited. If you follow  the links in my post you will find additional information. All the best.

I am a bit confused, just what does a DNA kit test FOR?
Is this the same type test, that proves or disproves paternity? I would guess that it is. As interesting as it would be to know all about my own personal chromosomal gifts and flaws, I am uncomfortable with the knowledge that somewhere an immortal copy the results, would automatically become part of my medical file. Nobody knows what mischief might become possible in the future, and there are already many threats to our privacy, now! Soon it will be possible to look at a DNA scan and know one's history (and future) If I were ever to take such a test and send it away for processing, the results will now and forever afterward exist in my medical file, and is therefor vulnerable to being shared with, sold to, or stolen by those whom I would not want to have this information. I wish there was a way that I could know what I ought to be vigilant about, watching for, and being tested for, without generating such information, over which I would have no control. There really is no such thing, as security anymore, if there ever really was.

Thanks

 for all the interesting comments.

The family gave me a beautiful scarf as a Chanukah gift and I’ve worn it every day since then. My granddaughter gave me a clothes hanger which she had decorated with raffia flowers; it’s both useful and decorative.

I too never take gifts back for refunds; there’s always somebody else who can use them and then there are plenty of jumble sales and charity shops here too. I keep boxes of chocolates as gifts for sylph-like friends! Wine and flowers  are always very welcome gifts. The best 'gift card' would be for 'window-cleaning and odd jobs unlimited'.

Although it would be exciting to find out, as Magic Moon’s cousin did where the family lived 3000 years ago, I’m not sure that I would like to know about genetic weaknesses which I’ve already passed on to the next generations. That aspect is frightening.

All my gifts were special but the one I will treasure the most is from my daughter.  She enrolled me and paid for a writing class held at the Richard Hugo House in Seattle!

Pat thanks for mentioning the song I’m my own grandma; here it is.

I really cannot say that I have received a bad gift. I've always found use for something even ugly clothes. I just wear them when I know I am not going out.

I don't know what I would do with a DNA testing kit.

Interesting gift
Could unearth all sorts of things.

I have one gift to return. A nightgown - has polyester in it. Will return and put money to something cotton. All other gifts were

perfect including clearance of a dangerously positioned tree.

Well that pretty much tops them all, doesn't it - a DNA kit!  We do limited gift giving around here.  My husband gave me some beautiful pearl earrings an I'll not be taking them back.  Hope you had a Merry Christmas.

I have occasionally had Christmas gifts returned to me, because I got the size wrong, or the recipient already had one. I would never do that to anyone (return their gift to them). I simply stack them up for the next raffle or request for a prize or something. They're always very well received.

I think it would wonderful if it were part of a study! I would prefer it at my birthday, though! lol I checked out the videos and they were very interesting! I had no idea of the similarities! The project is a cool concept, I think they are going to learn a lot! I have never returned anything, I have always got nice things that are usually befitting my personality! Shelly

You know Elinjo, I can honestly say I've never taken a gift back; yes, even if too small - I simpy gift to one that would need - and as far as the DNA - how intriguing.  I have a

Genealogy forum with my family and the other day there was this link that said I could be related to Al Gore --- I pushed the link and it was bogus of course.  I am related to many as I study and I would be overwhelmed quite frankly if I knew anymore.  Just imagine all the gifts that I would have to buy then...or feel compelled to.  At any rate, I love your blogs - always so interesting. There are certain areas in this country where a DNA test on one
individual would tell the story of the whole inter-married, close knit little town. An old novelty song --  "I'm my own grandma"  -- comes to mind.

...a cousin (not close at all - met him once in my life - his dad, my dad were 1st cousins) recently sent me a dna testing kit...seems that they have found the skeleton of my 3,000 year old (120 generations) stone aged ancestors in the Hartz mountains...interesting stuff...moon

Re: cauliflower
Exactly, very mind-boggling. Imagine the scene, we could in theory be accused of cannibalism when we eat our ancestors ! LOL

Plenty of food for thought in this post, Betty! Here you cannot return gifts! Thanks for your comments! Have a good day! Nita.

Hello Betty,  thanks so much for your visit. I must say this is a first that I have heard of a DNA testing kit and I am impressed too!! I will not look at the cauliflower the same way too now..lol. Never did return a present for a refund Betty and am not sure if it is possible here in fact. It so nice to read you again and have a lovely day yourself.
