The fun theory
Gap,
Who would have expected the Germans to come up with a novel idea like this! I thought that Germans spend all their time and energy trying to make every square foot of dirt productive, or ruling the world and killing off all the inferior races, as efficiently as possible. I never would have suspected that they are capable of even having fun. Stereotypes and lumping a people all together into one box, can steer you wrong, I realize, but having been born only a bit over a month after WWII ended, has set my opinion of the German people, for life. Bavarian culture will always leave me cold, I conclude.

If there are too many people on the escalator I choose the stairs. In Copenhagen people are less used to standing on the right and letting the busier or more energetic walk/run up on the left side of the escalators. In London on the other that is second nature.
I too would have like to compose music on the stairs in the video; brilliant idea. Thanks for sharing.

I would choose the stairs. I often do anyway, but this would make it fun, and fun counts for a lot.
