Coyote, they look that way living where it gets cold and they can eat/drink
They are rare-er in Yellowstone because of wolves, who hunt down other canids.

Hiya, Naut!

Good reasons to suppose it a coyote...  The ones I see around here are usually lanky and not nearly as bulky as this critter, but it is, after all, the end of the summer, when animals are at their well-filled best.

Whatever it is, it's a handsome critter!

Hey there Mal! Glad you're back!

Sounds like you had a fine time in Oregon!  I got home the day before you left the NW, took a few days for vacation-lag recovery...

I will mark down your vote for coyote--though I think wolves also have bushy tails.

I saw not a single bear in my 24 hours in the park this time.  But lots of bison!

I didn't go around to the side where Morning Glory Pool is.  Next time Charlie and I make the road-trip back to school, we'll come through Yellowstone again, and see it together.  I have seen it years ago, and i almost added another day in the park to see it again this time, but puppy voices were calling me home...  Kudos for making the 400 steps!  Were you there at the right time of day for rainbows?

skye, thanks so much!

I didn't know that about the Bright Angle Trail donkeys!  When I was there, I didn't go down into the Canyon... next time!

Best of luck to your daughter and her photography!

It is easier and easier to take good pictures with the technology available these days.  You just have to choose what you want to point it at, and keep still while you press the shutter button.  It benefitted my eye considerably to grow up with National Geographics, learning without trying what a good picture looks like.

Re: a wolf I'd say, a young one
Thanks, mysteria!  That was what I thought, too, though I had also been thinking about the wolves of Yellowstone, and the idea of a coyote never entered my pretty little head until someone else in the crowd said that.  I really wanted it to be a wolf!

Ciel

Having seen both wolves and coyotes fairly close up (we have coyotes even in our neighbourhood here in southern Ontario) I'd say it definitely is a coyote! Also, wolves rarely hunt by themselves, whereas coyotes almost always do. And coyotes generally get close as well as right into human settlements, which is very rare for wolves...

And fantastic pictures, as usual...

Hi, Ceil
Nice to be back and looking at your awesome photos.  From your pics, it's tough to tell about coyote vs. wolf, but from the looks of the bushy tail, it bears a striking resemblence to the coyotes we have in our CONNECTICUT!!  backyard.  Last year, when we were in Yellowstone, we decended and ascended those 400 steps, and my two teenage boys poked fun at me for being so pokey coming back up.  But it was worth it!  We stayed in the park 4 days and on the third day saw a momma black bear with FOUR cubs crossing the main road.  Park Rangers were keeping people back and photographers were lined up for miles, it seemed. It's an amazing place - supprised we haven't seen "Morning Glory" from you yet!  Mal

You are so talented
Just viewed your last sets of pictures.  Absolutely beautiful and awesome.  Someday I would like to learn more about photography. My neice has started a photography business called Unique Touch Photos.  She goes and spends the day with clients in their home taking pictures of children or their pets.  She has an awesome website.  We have coyotes around here now.  They eat cattle and small animals. She and her husband took their boys to the Grand Canyon a couple of years ago.  I wrote a story about them becoming donkey whisperers.  Did you know the mules they use for the canyon rides are raised in TN?
