What a beautiful post, It touched my heart in its truth.  Being also a Mom I totally understand what you are saying and possess as well that ultralong, strechy ever present umbilical cord that binds me to my own.  Thanks for that tender rendition of a mother's love. Your children are very lucky!

Mom, Mom
I agree, my son is almost eight years old and I still check on him during the night and when I pick him up at the aftercare, the teacher has to give me a full report on what happened during the day. And strangely enough when something good happened he'll be the first to tell me, but if he's being naughty he''l leave the story for the teacher to tell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seedlings,
I think this is why my mom was so worried about how I was going to handle it when she died. When she did die, well, she was right. I guess a mom always knows her kid no matter how old they are.

you are a wonderful mom dear seedlings...........
cant help but agree.umbilical connections stretches even thousands of miles away...my mother knows when one of her 7 siblings is ill...she'd feel sick too and she would call each one overseas til she finds out who is hurt or sick...surely one of us is...one great gift of a great  'mom'...your children are so lucky dear as well as your grandchildren...God Bless You

Hi Seedlings!
I can't imagine what it must feel like to hear your grandchild's first cry -- but you described it so achingly well, I felt I'd been there, worrying and hand-wringing right along with you! And speaking of going into ones DNA- deviled eggs she was making? The universe is a head-shaking place, isn't it?

SEEDLINGS
I was born to be a mom and I feel blessed and honored to have been entrusted by God to raise my children to adulthood.  I now feel equally blessed to be Grandmother. Yes, once a mother, always a mother, for the caring and loving never dies.

Incredibly Beautiful Writing!
Though I don't have any children of my own, I "kinda" know the feeling!  I have 6 nieces and nephews, and have tried to help, and always be there for them with some wisdom along the rough road they have each traveled.  The oldest is 19, the youngest 8.  They have been through their parent's divorcing, which was the hardest for the two youngest.  The oldest is just getting used to her 2nd, or is it third year of college now.  She has changed schools twice.  The girls are much more emotional than the boys might I add.  Anyway, I think they all know that I am there for them for anything they need!  Aunt vs a Mother!

Very touching story.
I think mothers know better than anybody, as you can attest, that the physical realm is only one way we can connect with loved ones; maybe not even the most tangible way.  There's a lot going on behind the scenes.
