Typical corporate BS
I can relate!  In years past I was one to volunteer to do this or that.  I learned the hardway to quit volunteering.  I use to make it known that I was willing to work harder than others, not anymore.  If they want to pay me for it fine otherwise forget it.

Jems,
Corporate bullshit. I hate it. I especially hate the catch 22 situation. See, you know that if you do payroll, it'll be done correctly, then again if you don't have to do it anymore, you won't have the extra headache and responsibility. I just hope you've been compensated for your extra efforts. It sounds like a bad move for the company to actually hire an extra person (hence, another paycheck to pay out) for something that YOU are already doing. hmmmm....

okay I have a comment for the payroll write up!

Similar to your situation, I had a job once, as supervisor of bookkeeping dept of a pretty big company.  I didnt' even want the job, but my boss actually asked me to take it, so I did.  I was not only the newest person in my dept, but also the youngest (at only 21), and the only one of about 20 people with any education past high school.  I took the job, along with a pretty good bonus and more pay, even though I had my reservations.  Well, they all pretty much hated me when I decided to take all of their manual jobs and put them on a computer to cut their completion time in half.  Yup, that was me, and oh did they ALL hate me!!!  They did not want to learn computers period!!!  Took a long time to gain their respect, and in the end they saw I was a great supervisor, and a pretty intelligent too.  Eventually, the regional and national headquarters started talking directly to me and faxing all critical time consuming bookeeping issues and errors to me, etc...my manager (who begged me to take the job) was getting false info from some of the other 3 very jealous supervisors, and I found out my mgr actually posted "MY" job in the paper without telling me.  Little did she know....Nobody knew my computer 'stuff', and I was the only person who knew all 16+ jobs in my dept.  When I found out that my job was posted, I was a bit furious.  So, I went that day to a contract house, told them I was looking for a job, and they placed me within 2 days!!!  I waited until Friday afternoon ~3pm to tell my manger that my last day of work will be Monday.  I gave her a 1 day notice, and she had the whole weekend to worry, wonder, and cry about how to replace me.  There is much more to it, but I would have to write a book.  Do what you have to do!!!  You  have to worry about you because nobody else will.  Take care of #1.  Best of Luck to you in your endeavours.  Keep in mind what goes around comes around!  The truth will ALWAYS prevail eventually!!!!

Jems .... Take a Breath, Girl!

EEO law requires your employer to advertise an opening, EVEN if he's planning to fill it from within. So polish up your resume, write a snappy cover letter, and officially apply for the position. And then work your bestest over the next few weeks while they sift through the incredible pile of resumes that will pour in. Keep a smile on your face and complaints out of the picture. Work HARD and SMART.

And I, for one, will be praying that you will stand out as the best person for the job!

Hang in there. I don't know that you won't get the job! The posting is merely addressing the opening. I say officially apply for it!  sam

Jemmy
Do you want and need to do that job?  Sounds like some potential for stress. Just

because you offer a logical solution to them doesn't mean they will recognise it. They see things only as problems that need solving. Let them know that you can help, but only do so

if it is what you want and need.

Take a deep breath, remember that the people who are the pains in the butt are probably more worried about their own positions than anything you are doing.

I'll shut up now because i know nothing ;-)
