Once upon a time... When Ma Bell was hale and heartless

They gave me a phone number that someone else already owned, area code and all. It really confused and irritated an elder relative who tried to call us and got this other old lady in southern Ohio.

I called Ma Bell and said I'd been told the wrong number by the installer, but Ma said, no--it was correct. I explained the problem, and Ma said with great certainty, "that can't happen."

But it did, sometimes, several times over the next two years we had that number.

Aunt Mimi never believed the other old lady, either, and demanded she hand over the phone to us.

more than likely it isnt possible for a wrong number to show up, but it could be her hubby or son, and knew it was going to be you calling, and let grandma answer. Sick sick people

There are various reasons that this may have occurred, Offy, a couple of

which tend to drive conspiracy theories and doomsday tales of Big Brother. Then there's the old computer glitch...

Reminds me of a funny story. Many years ago, (before cells or caller I.D.) single and sound to sleep the phone rang, I answered and it was a hot and sweaty voice on the other end. I hung up. The caller called back and before I knew it I was instructing the poor fellow on how to do what it was he was attempting. Seems it was his first time nasty cold calling.

Yikes... that pretty creepy. I, too, had thought obscene phone calls were a thing of the past. Not sure about the caller ID thing...

I've never had an obscene phone call, I only get people who want to sell me magazines, or strangers who begin by saying, "Who's this?", to which my response is, "I know who this is, but I don't know who the hell you are!"
