The banes of society!
Cell phones cause more opprotunities for rudeness than anything I know!  I am with you there!  I DON'T need to be gotten a hold of  ALL the time!  Nobody should be that available either!  Here, in Japan, what REALLY gets my goat is teenagers on BICYCLES text messaging and NOT looking where they are going!  There is a law against talking while driving too but I see it ALL THE TIME!  We have surpassed rude and entered HAZARDOUS!  I could go on and on and on......but I have one....thankfully it remains silent throughout most the day.

Re: i deal with angry and rude people all day, it's a real challenge,
Hi Callista, though I'm not sure why you'd give money to a rude cell-phone user, it's important to be conscious of the other person.

Re: FYS
eyeshaveears, that is exactly correct.  Western culture has really lost the idea of respect & courtesy.  Being well-mannered is about putting others first.

i deal with angry and rude people all day, it's a real challenge,
I try to determine if they are just basically rude or if they are just angry.  The basically rude people i tolerate, give them a little money and they think they won. The angry i try to help them work through the anger so that we can give them what they wanted in the first place.

FYS

I use a mobile, though I put it on silent now, when in public or even when going into a shop.  If I was at a dinner engagement, such as the one you mentioned, it would most definately be on silent.  I also don't agree with people who use them in public and talk so loud as if we want to hear their converstaion.  As for that person in the airport, I find these people are merely attention seeking or simply entertaining themself, as I for one am not entertained by it.  Again it's all about respectful behaviour FYS.

Bless

Regards

Re: FYS...
food4thought, I HEAR YOU BIG TIME!!! Texting is a total mystery to me.  You're already dialing the phone, why not just call????  IT'S MADDNING!!!!

FYS...
If you'll allow me that shorthand, what I don't get is texting.  I mean, it's a phone, they were made to talk on, and it's much quicker, this verbal communication thing.

Re:
Katzs, great observation, I agree.  People can't communicate effectively anymore.  And what about those texts?  They're not even English.  That commercial for the cellphones drives me bonkers (my bff rose....PUKE!!!!!!!)

Re: Lasting Impression Of Rude Behavior
joab, great point!  I think that's what our dinner guest was doing, flexing his muscles over his life.  But in the process, he pissed us off and alienated himself further.  It is a sad thought.

Re: Bravo! Excellent post, well said, well written!

Chyrlann---it's just unbelievable, isn't it?  I do it at work, but I'm at work, and apologize.  When I had a cell phone, I would leave it on the charger in my room and not answer it.  It would be off in my purse, off when driving, off whenever I had company.

Now I have a land phone and cancelled it.  It's a hassle!

Re your daughter and myspace:  My mother (of all people) does that crap to me...but she's watching TV, and I say the exact same thing to her that you said to your daughter!

Sira, isn't it terrible?  What the heck is the matter with people?

The use of handphone is for communication and it is irony that the very thing(cellphone) is turning communication into a total disaster. People who uses cellphone are simply losing their communication skills, that is listening. I can understand your situationkatzs

Lasting Impression Of Rude Behavior
There's no explanation that will ever explain human behavior patterns, is there?  Cell phones will become even more ubiquitious, I fear.  IMO, cell phones users, in many instances, use their phone as "escape" mechanisms, where they, by punching the key pad assume virtual authority over their lives . . .and that "virtual" authority may be all they have going.  And that's a sad thought; one that inflicts and invades and intrudes upon the lives of strangers all too often.  joab

Bravo! Excellent post, well said, well written!

Anyone in my presence deserves my respect and undivided attention without interruption, unless an emergency or awaiting an important phone call and then I would excuse myself momentarily and apologize for my absence. I haven't needed a cell phone since my real estate days until currently (I'm becoming mobile in my business and renting a room temporarily so a cell is required), so it is easy for me to judge not having had one for awhile. My life is anything but spontaneous with scheduled business appointments and planned evenings & weekends with family and friends so I would still consider being present more than just physically and valuing my time with the person or persons in my presence.

The man who invited you to the dinner party was probably in a spontaneous business and obviously doesn't have prioritizing, time management, the ability to say no or regulating business hours skills (in other words working out of desperation as opposed to organization) skills. It was nonetheless rude behavior.

I kindly but bluntly emphasized this courtesey to my daughter on the telephone Sunday night. We talk once a week; more like I ask questions and she says ahh huu, ahhh ah...(18), I finally asked her what she was doing..she was writing on her My Space. I responded, Well..I guess it's more important than our Sunday five minute calls, so I'll try again next Sunday when you're not so busy with more important matters. She felt badly, and she should have. She was the one initiating the Sunday night, five minute catch up call.

I totally Agree!
I was in line at the 7-11 just the other day, stuck behind some guy with a phone glued to his ear. He didn't even hang up long enough to interact with the clerk. He held up the line with his babbling, and his language was offensive to myself and several others in line. If I hadn't had my hands full, I wold have grabbed his phone and crammed it up his nose!

Re: Thank you , thank you, thank you...
callista, you are so welcome!  It's a terrible social hazzard, and it doesn't make them look important.  It makes them look like a loser that's sitting by the phone waiting for it to ring!

Thank you , thank you, thank you, for this post and saying this so well,
I have noticed that people seem to think it makes them look important or well liked to constantly be on the cell phone.  NOT!!!!!!   I watched a young man on his  cell call 6 different people, evidently to be blown off by each one, in the short time it took me to eat a sandwich for lunch. (he also hacked and spit on the ground and every other word started with an F.)

Re: THEY DON'T KNOW WHO THEY ARE
Azur, tell me about it.  Self-awareness is not a trait that people seem to want to have. They prefer to dillude themselves into thinking they're the exception to every rule.  Thanks for reading!

Corbin, actually, I don't consider that rude at all.  I consider it respectful of the many others that have to hear the stupid thing going off.

It is a sickness, an epidemic, it is much more frustrating than dealing with a person with the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.   At first you think they are just lacking in manners, but soon you realize they are unable to control themselves.  Have pity on them.

I agree. This country has lost it's manners. We get new gadgets and along with them come a new set of bad manners. We are as responsible. We should not associate with those people again. God bless you.
