Try different angles.

Too many times we take a picture and leave it at that. A good shot, but maybe there is another angle that will give a whole new perspective (pun intended) to your photo. Of course one is not always free to go anywhere one wants, but when the opportunity presents itself, take advantage of it. This... Sign in to see full entry.

Bracketing de-mystified.

Bracketing sounds complicated to the amateur photographer, I know, I am one of those. There is a way to have the camera do it automatically, but I didn’t have time to figure that out, so I used the Av feature. You may see that on your display, it is a line that starts at –2, goes to zero then to +2.... Sign in to see full entry.

Sunsets, my weakness

The way the colors play and dance across the sky, morning or evening has always struck me as one of the most beautiful things one can witness. They are well suited to photographs because how else can you share them. Who ever takes the time to watch a sunset run through its repertoire? Sunsets are... Sign in to see full entry.

Just two of my favorites

Sometimes luck is on your side when it comes to capturing a really great picture. Of course as I have said before, having your camera at the ready as much as possible increases your chances of getting a good shot when it presents itself. So it was this fall day when we went to turn off the water at... Sign in to see full entry.

Sometimes a picture is not a photo.

Or, something like that. Consider this shot. A gaggle of power lines, poles and signs is not something that normally draws a wistful eye. But frame it just so and it becomes a metaphor for our hectic lives with things going in all directions and a confusing array of guideposts meant to help us... Sign in to see full entry.

Frozen in time

Photos capture a moment. That moment can be anything you want it to be. Sometimes I take shots that I don’t have any plans for. Recently I ate breakfast at a diner in downtown Spokane. It is a true diner, a converted railroad car dripping with atmosphere. I took several pictures trying to capture... Sign in to see full entry.

The best way to improve your eye

Check out all the other photographers in this category, they are good. Look at what it is about those photos you find yourself drawn to. Check out a photography magazine from the library. Read the National Geographic Magazines at your mother’s house. The equipment you use, technical matters like... Sign in to see full entry.

A deep subject

Focus is not only a function of the focusing ring or the auto focus, the f/stop also has a great influence over how much of the picture is in focus. There is a distinct “range of focus” called the depth of field. Field in this case represents the area of the photo that will be in focus. The way it... Sign in to see full entry.

I’ve been framed!

One of the easiest things to do is to frame a shot. No, I don’t mean anything that involves Elmer’s Glue and carpentry skills. There might be other elements you can use to draw the eye into your photo to tell the story you want. In order to highlight the central branch that had the greatest color... Sunsets – end of the day – everlasting picture

When the sun goes down, marvelous things happen in the sky. The clouds can seem to catch fire, or pose like molten lava in the sky. But getting the right exposure may not be so easy. In the old days, I would take a light reading straight up, then straight at the horizon. I would average the two and... Sign in to see full entry.
