Is Tuesday the worst day of the week?

I call them 'Terrible Tuesdays'. Monday is the start of a shiny new week. Wednesday is the half way point and precedes Thursday, always a good day for me, and everyone like Fridays. I think I have a subconscious negativity about Tuesdays, which means I never have a good one. I used to dislike... Sign in to see full entry.

My books are like old friends

I have a library of over 200 books. I cannot bear to part with a single book, yet I am planning to sell the lot before I move. I have moved home 6 times in my life and each time I had more books to accommodate. There are not many novels in my library, and they are mostly literary classics. The books... The future does not exist. It never did.

The book is not written. The pages are blank. The story has not been told. These were my feelings when I left school. Filled with relief that my schooldays were behind me, I had no real plans, expectations or ambitions. Even my wedding day seemed more like an ending than a beginning. I was leaving... The First Ever Blogger

"I myself am the subject of my book: it is not reasonable that you should employ your leisure on a topic so frivolous and so vain" This was written in 1580 by Michel de Montaigne, a French nobleman who gave up public life to spend his time reading and thinking. Writing about love, friendship, sex,... Sign in to see full entry.

Change of Direction

I am going to sell up, move out, go away and start a new life. I have been living here for 16 years. I have stayed here partly because I needed to be near to someone I loved, but since our 12 year relationship ended in December, I have come to realise that being emotionally independent is not so... Miss Wright was wrong and Socrates was right

I was about seven years old when my schoolteacher, Miss Wright, was explaining about the sun and the moon and the rotation of the earth. I can remember her asking whether it is possible to see the sun and the moon at the same time. She was addressing the question to a small boy, called David. He... Sign in to see full entry.

From darkness to light

I was awake early, as usual, before daylight. By 7 a.m. it was lighter, and it felt warm for the time of year. I opened my window fully and could hear the soft sound of fresh rain. I saw a quick quiver of lightning, which was followed by a low roll of distant thunder. By midday I was feeling... Sign in to see full entry.

There is always a way

When I set out to go for a walk, I do not always know where I am going. Often I will follow a familiar route, and sometimes I end up somewhere I have never been before. Today I turned into an unfamiliar road, which came to a dead end. It went nowhere. Then I noticed a footpath leading round the end... Sign in to see full entry.

Life is a journey, not a destination.

Some years ago I moved out of rented accommodation and bought myself a small studio apartment in a quiet suburb. My previous locality was becoming an increasingly desirable, and expensive, part of London. I have always missed it and resented the fact that I had to move, for financial reason, to a... Setting Your Own Goals

I do not see myself as a competitive person. I would rather feel appreciated and valued than be seen competing for top place. In the past, I have found myself working harder and facing bigger challenges than some of my colleagues at work, without getting any official recognition for it, but I did...
