Born to hippies, I entered this world in the back of a van on the side of a highway in California because my parents and their friends were getting to a concert, come Hell or high water. Until I was three, I lived on a commune in Colorado where my main duties included making soap so that when we all bathed in the pond, we would get somewhat clean.
When I was three, my parents either woke up and realized that was no way to raise a kid or sold out to the man, because they bought a house in the suburbs of St. Louis, Missouri, where they finished raising me. Schooled at a private Catholic school, I attended Mass every day for the first thirteen years of my life when they decided I was old enough to make my own decisions. I never went back.
Married at the age of nineteen (in honor of Steely Dan) to the father of my already-born two children and high school sweetheart, I moved to the city of Eureka where I settled into the life of a housewife. It wasn't long before I found myself in the depths of an addiction to methamphetamine. The next decade is a haze.
On February 19, 2005, my husband and I decided we had enough and had to get sober. We packed our two cars up with the bare necessities of life and left everything behind to move to Slidell, Louisiana. After a few weeks of detoxing, we felt we had found paradise among the swamps and marshes.
On August 29, 2005, hurricane Katrina stormed ashore, taking a direct hit at our city. Everything was lost, and we are still in the process of putting our lives back together.
