... a friend at boarding school had been impacted by the Jesus movement in the late 70's and she told me about the phenomenon of the Holy Spirit... gifts of the spirit to build up the body of christ... the church... i read and studied the bible and wanted as much as i could get of these things and i asked Christ to baptize me with his Holy Spirit and for the gift of speaking in tongues and prophecy in particular...
when i was home for spring break during my senior year of high school while i was sitting on my bed i asked God for the gift of tongues and just went ahead and did it... i doubted it for quite sometime and finally demonstrated it for someone who said, yes that's tongues...
beats me if i know what i'm praying and i don't use it as often as i could or should but i believe it's for anyone who wants it... as for prophecy... it says in ICorinthians 12 to eagerly desire that you may prophesy... and defines it as strengthening, encouraging, and comforting...
In the old testament the prophet Joel talks about dreams and visions and says that in the last days... that those gifts will be poured out in greater measure as well.

My name is Carolyn and I live with a miniature poodle that I rescued at the local Humane Society. I've never been married. I have no children, step children, et.al. Every Saturday at precisely 11 am I meet with my parents and sister (whose married with 2 grown children) for lunch at a nearby restaurant. I also have 2 unmarried brothers and 1 married brother with three grown children who live in CA, MT, and FL respectively.
