I am a 27 (well, almost) year old single male with a beautiful little girl who is four. I live in a small country town in Western Australia and I have been writing poetry on and off now for about four years. When I first picked up a pen, I had a crazy dream about being a best selling novelist (who doesn't hey?), and after about two years I finally come to terms with the fact that my stories were . . . well, crap. They never seemed to have an ending that pleased anyone, and I was constantly told my writing was more expression than story telling. So, for this very reason, I turned to writing poetry, which at first proved more difficult than story spinning.
I couldn't seem to find my feet or my voice. I tried ballads, epic's, you name it, and I was never happy with any of them. When I turned to free verse, I found that I was able to express myself without having to worry too much about finding the right word to go here and there. But still, I had trouble because I could not keep rhythm in my work. I admit even now most my poems have no rhythm, but you know what? I don't care. I'm not writing a hit single for the local rap-artist, I'm writing my feelings, my thoughts, and if you can't find the knee slapping beat in my poems, well don't worry. Read the words, feel the emotions, and step into my mind. As my favourite saying goes: if it's to be, it's up to me.
