Hi, my name is George Gould.
I love this country and I love being an American.
I come from a long line of people who have served America - indeed, I can point to ancestors who have fought in every major war back to the American Revolution and probably beyond. My entire adult life has been spent in the service of America. I enlisted in the Army as an infantryman in 1968 and wound up retiring in 1993 as a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy Medical Service Corps.
Along the way, in addition to serving two tours of duty in Vietnam where I earned the Combat Infantryman's Badge (CIB) and the Purple Heart for wounds received in action, I have been a Military Policeman in what used to be West Berlin, a medic with the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in Fulda, West Germany and a comptroller at various Navy medical facilities. Following my retirement from the Navy, I have worked as a consultant with various activities in the Department of Defense.
Because I have served, fought and bled for this wonderful country of ours, I have spent many years thinking long and hard about what it means to be an American. How did I get so lucky as to be born in 20th Century America, a land of wealth and plenty? What separates America from the rest of the world besides our wealth and strength? What do I owe as an individual in return for these blessings? What unites as Americans? What divides us? What common values do we share? What did I fight and bleed for?
I hope you enjoy this blog and most of all I hope you find value in it.
