History of "Jodysmith." Jody was my nickname when I was a boy.  When I was five, I set out on my tricycle to see the world. The cops found me hours later, miles from home, talking with a yard man. When I was 49, I set sail on the South Atlantic Ocean on a 37 foot sloop I named Bold Venture. When I was 73, with my wife Karen, we hit the road in our RV and remained on wheels for nine years.

I'm 84 and married to my fourth wife--for 28 wonderful years. We live in our dream home in the tall timber near Mt. Hood, Oregon.  I occupy my time writing, playing my keyboard and guitar, gardening, hiking, and viewing TV--on Fox News, Glenn Beck and Hannity every day, on weekends, Huckabee. I like the History Channel, and Science.

I lived in the Dallas, Texas area my first 49 years. On Good Friday, 1975, I departed and never looked back. My business career of 25 years and second marriage was on the rocks. For the following two years, I lived on my sloop Bold Venture sailing the South Atlantic, during which time miracles occurred.

My life has been a mystery ever since my departure from my old life.  I took a career job in Portland, Oregon in 1978. In early May, 1980, my third wife walked out without notice. I never saw her again.  Two weeks later I met my fourth wife, when the last thing I wanted was another wife. She was like meeting an old friend I'd not seen for a long time.  I made a date with her to hike to Multnomah Falls near Portland. On May 18,1980, we were sitting on a log on the trail chatting when the sky turned black in the northwest. We hurried back to the car to learn that Mt. St. Helens had erupted. It is legendary. After the calamity, hope and renewal.

The feeling that Karen is someone I've known in another life remains. One branch of Karen's family, the Dempseys, lived in Texas and intermarried with the Whitworths. My middle name is Whitworth.

With both of us retired, in the spring of 1999 we sold our home, purchased an RV and traveled for nine years, finally landing permanently in our dream home.

I've come from the depth of despair, on Good Friday 1975, to a life that doesn't get any better. John Newton (1725 to 1807) wrote the words to Amazing Grace. “Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me.”  Newton grew up without any religious training. He became a sea captain plying the slave trade. In a storm at sea, Newton found God, and the same for me.

I didn't know God until I departed and went strickly on my own. In a raging sea, God's hand was on my wheel.  There have been many milestones in my life since, symbols of how the universe works.  I'm into the occult and astrology. "On earth as it is in heaven," I didn't learn it in church, I know from personal experience the powerof God. If we but knew it, we are all God's children.
