That reminded me when my son wanted to drop music class at the end of the semester during 9th grade. I did a Ben Franklin close listing the pros and cons knowing full well I would list more pros. Lol It was several years later that he told me he was glad I had him stay in music because he learned to read music. I like the way you approached it, too!

if you can play the tune and make music I don't think it matters if you need to read the music or can remember the notes and timing!

I can relate. Both of my grandkids can write and read sheet music. They each play several instruments, so it comes in handy.
