I was just learning shorthand it seemed quite easy but leaving school at 14
One can tell how bad it was no one passed the tests for Higher Education.

Good Morning
Pat, I was not popular in school, but I did have my friends. I walked to school when I was in High School. We lived right across the street from the school. I liked that. I took all office classes, and just like you, I got an office job right out of school.

I wasn't miss Popular at school either, but I could swing between the popular girls and my group and did have two friends who were day girls.

My favorite posts of yours are from your school days. There is something to being a nerd. They are the kids who become the most successful later in life. Living ten miles from the school makes after-school activities almost impossible without transportation, unless you have a good pair of track shoes and a healthy set of lungs. I love the clothing and shoes you described wearing to school. My mother wore similar outfits. She used to make her own blouses from the fabric sack the potatoes came in. High school can be a humbling experience for kids who aren't a part of the in crowd. At my high school, it was a big deal to the in crowd to drive your own car once you hit your sophomore or junior year. I rode a ten-speed bicycle. I had friends, but I worked after school, and I had a strict curfew. I did attend a few school dances, and my favorite activity was roller skating at the local rink on Saturday night.

High school is crazy time period. It has influenced in positive and negative ways on youth. Some folks who did not have a great experience allowed it to adversely affect them in adulthood. Fortunately for you being a 'nerd' had a positive effect that led to a job. I went to 4 different high schools so my focus was just graduating on time. I didn't think about other classmates or what they wore because I had so many. I did graduate on time and my college years were the absolute best!
