Your close on what he focused on was probably the reason he got tabbed on that sonnet! It's hard today for people to buy into mental health; it had to be even more difficult to get people to understand, see and accept it in his lifetime.

Life is already short enough. Suicidal tendencies are not something I have ever completely understood. Mental illness is sometimes hidden by the person who is seeking to end it, as was the case for my father. No one around him would have suspected that he had suicidal thoughts, but he fooled us all. He was only thirty-six when he made that fatal choice. Wilted rose
