It was a different time. Teachers and parents didn't hesitate to smack a kid around. When I was in the 8th grade, I remember the principal threatening to give students a whack on their behind with a wooden paddle if they didn't walk a straight line. A decade later, the popularity of kids divorcing their parents came along, and parents feared touching their child.

We had a little female teacher with a very short temper. One day she lost it as usual and threw her chalk at a student and then stalked out of the room. Unheard of in a`` Ladies college`` back then! Seconds later she came back into the room with the giggles and all was forgotten and forgiven. She didn`t apologise but, the whole thing just set us, and her, off laughing!
